Project Summary

Involved in the project were five international organizations. A joint group was formed between groups that have already worked together under international cooperation. Organizations participating in the project operate in similar social settings, and most members are seniors, so all partners have experience in this age group. During mutual contacts a concept of a joint project designed for 50+ participants was created. The details of the project were refined during the first organizational meeting, which took place before the planned start of the project in March 2015, then the division of tasks between the partners was established. It was agreed that the main objective of the project would be to convey knowledge about traditions, customs and culture of partners using modern technologies, hence its title: “Modern technologies as a tool for intercultural education and raising public awareness” Participants in the project are age groups who often have limited opportunities because of their age and in this particular case, due to their place of residence. It is therefore justified to classify them as a socially excluded group. However, their potential, willingness to develop and gain new experience should also be emphasized. The only important thing is to reach the group appropriately, giving them opportunities and creating the appropriate conditions. It has been therefore decided to provide them with the possibility of intercultural education by means of innovative and effective methods, while also giving them the opportunity to become familiar with contemporary technologies such as digital photography and internet services. In addition, participants were offered the opportunity to learn English in order to facilitate international contacts.
During the project, the participants took part in a computer course, mainly learning how to navigate the Internet, use instant messengers, create a profile on a social networking site. The number of participants in the course – 100 individuals, 20 from each country. On the other hand, the photographic course helped them to get acquainted with different techniques of taking pictures and their digital processing. The number of participants in the course – 100 individuals, 20 from each country. Combining these skills in those two areas allowed them to create a common profile on a social networking site, which resulted not only in learning the multicultural nature of the participants through the placement of photos or information but also establishing and maintaining international contacts. Whereas the photo exhibition summarizing the project effectively raised the level of self-assessment of the participants.
During the international project meetings, which took place at each of the partners in the form of seminars and thematic conferences, project participants became acquainted with the customs and culture of the collaborators, focusing on similarities and intercultural differences. Each meeting will be attended by 3-8 people from each visiting country and approx. 30 individuals from the country organizing the meeting. During the meetings, the participants were also given the opportunity to present the experiences and skills acquired during workshops organized in their own country. Moreover, they had the chance to use their skills to create common products – two folders, a puzzle photo, a photo disc and a photo album, a Facebook profile, and a joint photo exhibition crowning the project. Seniors took part in a joint didactic game in order to test their acquired skills, as well as in field games or in joint photography workshops, so that they could exchange their experiences and skills.
During the project, a meeting calendar, gadgets with a project logo, puzzle with pictures of landscapes, a folder on traditions and customs of the region, and a photo album with commemorative photographs (t-shirts and key rings) were issued. In addition, an electronic chronicle of the project was kept.
Project reports were kept up to date on the websites of all partners, as well as in the local media.
During the project and after its completion, the knowledge and experience gained by the participants were disseminated amongst the members of the organization, local people (among all age groups), local government officials, other NGOs, partners working with organizations and a wide range of stakeholders via Internet, media and general project products.
