Project Summary
The main objective of the project YOU CAN BE A HERO was to enable high school students in France, Greece, Portugal and Latvia to carry out a variety of transnational activities on the inclusion of people in society, especially disability, employment, equality, volunteering and social media.
The project allowed high school students to gain confidence, helping them to find a place in our society, because it allowed them to become heroes IN our society and not against the society.
Our aim was to take into account the current situation in the participating countries and to try to contribute to the common European values of freedom, tolerance and non-discrimination by encouraging students to play the role of heroes in their daily lives.
The aim was to strengthen the link between school education and society by linking general and vocational schools in the project and including various non-profit organizations.
The main objective was to make an online game, in which the player can become a hero in various situations. All the partners participated in the elaboration of the interactive and collaborative game since they built the scenario step by step, after having researched on the subject and analyzing the positive and negative impacts. They worked in international teams on each “world” “or chapter of the game which corresponds to one topic of the project. The project has also provided a framework for cooperation and the possibility of direct contacts with witnesses or experts on the topics discussed: associations for the handicapped, political personalities and entrepreneurs, witnesses or local heroes, experts in the field of the uses of the internet, etc. These meetings had a real interest for everyone, both instructive and fruitful. Teachers have optimized their pedagogical knowledge and the public has been informed through publications, presentations, exhibitions, etc.
All the objectives and topics addressed by the project have been achieved. The students were involved in many activities at local level, volunteering, debating and collaborating with students from other countries. They have opened up to the many questions relating to Europe, when travelling but also during online meetings with young people from other countries. They have broadened their horizons, they have also had the chance to meet MEPs and to discover the other political systems of Europe.
During this 2-year partnership, the links between school and the working world were numerous: young people met entrepreneurs, professionals, who could contribute to a career choice and thus encourage them to follow the direction that they wish. We worked together vocational and general high schools, students and teachers, so that people could meet and work together (social careers, waiters and cooks, tourism students).
This project helped to build students’ self-esteem and social-emotional skills. Indeed, they have become more responsible, confident, autonomous and independent. Students worked together on the content of the digital game and learned how to use digital collaboration and communication tools.
Teachers have also been able to use digital collaboration tools, and have discovered others that they are now using with their regular classes. They learned to organize presentations (padlet / etwinning / kahoot / iboske / actionbound ..)
The public was informed about the project through presentations (to parents, municipalities and political institutions), publications in the media, school and local websites, exhibitions in schools, but also through active participation in local organizations (associations ) or during certificate ceremonies.
Schools have developed different interdisciplinary approaches, multidisciplinary teaching teams have been organized. Relationships between teachers and pupils but also parents have become stronger. Institutions have also gained more support and involvement from other local actors: local and regional authorities, companies, etc.
