Project Summary

The project YOUTH ALPINE EXPRESS is a project for strengthening youth participation in the Alps regarding the topic of sustainable mobility and new consumer behavior through the development of a new learning tool: an experiential and sustainable journey through the Alps. Target groups were young people, youth workers and decision-makers from several Municipalities from all over the Alps. Around 20 young people from 4 alpine countries (France, Italy, Slovenia and Austria) accompanied by youth workers were participating. They travelled from their hometown to alpine relevant events only by sustainable transport means. They had a given time and a given CO2 Budget to respect. The travel was designed as a team-game. The CO2 Budget was valid for the whole group for 5 days. It meant the singles or some small groups will have to bargain with each-other to stick to the given rules. During this travel the participants are meeting some decision-makers, presenting their experience in the public and recording their choices in a CO2 Documentation. In this way the consequences of each decision were made visable (travelling by feet was taking longer but I enjoyed the landscape, I got a new friend and so on….)A coach supported the young participants before the journey, in the planning phase and in producing creative formats (postcards, flash mobs) to present the thematic challenges to a broader public during the event they are joining. A website, www.youthalpineexpress.eu, reports about the journeys. You can read collections of the CO2 documentation as well as multimedia-reports, dialogues with decision-makers and stay as a new tool to travel in a sustainable way through the Alps. Aims of the project were: 1) young people living in the Alps are aware that traveling in a sustainable way has an high added value and is an important contribute to reach the aim carbon-neutral Alps.2) decision-makers make possible more youth participation regarding mobility policies. 3) Youth workers increase their know-how regarding the topic of sustainable mobility and 2000-Watt society and are able to inform and sensitize a broader group of young people.
