Project Summary

During the last years, there has been an increase in the number of young people with fewer opportunities in Europe. According to Eurostat (ilc_peps01, 13-8-2015), the percentage of young people aged between 16 and 24 years old at risk of social exclusion in the EU-28 increased from 29,4% in 2009 to 31,6% in 2013.

Fostering the inclusion and employability of young people with fewer opportunities (including NEETs), is a priority at European level (youth specific priority of the Erasmus+, priority of the EU inclusion and diversity strategy in the field of youth, priority of the EU Youth Strategy and the European youth policies).

Providing social entrepreneurship education to young people with fewer opportunities is a very effective way of contributing to their social inclusion and employability. However, young people with fewer opportunities have different needs when it comes to social entrepreneurship education than other young people. Therefore, there is the need to improve the competences and capacities of youth workers across Europe so they can provide high-quality social entrepreneurial experiences to young people with fewer opportunities.

In order to respond to these needs, three organisations from the sector of youth work and a private company specialised in developing non-formal learning methods to provide social entrepreneurship education to people from disadvantaged groups, joined their forces to produce the first ‘Toolkit for youth workers to provide non-formal social entrepreneurship education to young people with fewer opportunities’ in Europe.

The toolkit includes a set of innovative non-formal learning methods (exercises, simulations, group dynamics, contrasting cases, role-playing…), as well as supporting tools and materials for the implementation of these methods such as videos, presentations, images, graphics, charts, on-line applications, etc.

In order to ensure that the toolkit is customised to the needs of the target group and end beneficiaries, the partners tested the toolkit with the target group: youth workers, and the end beneficiaries: young people with fewer opportunities. 6 youth workers and 43 young people from 3 countries participated in the testing of the toolkit.

Beyond the partners, the toolkit have the potential to be exploited by a wide range of organisations and individuals from the fields of education, training, youth work and social inclusion across Europe. Thanks to its deployment in five languages as OER (Open Educational Resource) under the Creative Commons licence “Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0)”, anyone will be allowed to, not only use it for free, but also to modify it and adapt it to other target groups. Therefore, the toolkit will serve as the impulse for future innovations and developments in the fields of education, training, youth work and social inclusion across Europe. As a result, this project will be a stepping stone towards a fully inclusive European society where every young person has access to high quality education and employment.
