Project Summary

The project ” 5×4- European schools on the road to sustainable development ” involves schools from four European countries : France (Groupe scolaire des Chevreuils and Collège Emilie Carles in Ancerville), Romania (Scoala Gimnaziala 2 in Hunedoara), Scotland (Dalbeattie High School in Dalbeattie) and Portugal (Agrupamento de Escolas Miguel Torga in Braganca). It consists in having 9 to 15-year-old students (most of them from rural areas) work on the issue of the UN Sustainable Development Goals so that, together, they can forge their identity as European eco-citizens. Successively and mainly working on four SDGs (Good health and well-being, Quality education, Life below water and sustainable consumption and production patterns), students will be able to study some aspects of their curriculum, to study real-life situations and conduct field trips, to identify the actions to take every day to achieve the SDGs and to promote these actions within their schools and in their local communities (creating posters to promote engagement, encourage debate and make short videos to raise awareness of the SDG issues, etc …).
Throughout the project, the leading teachers in each school will be in contact to follow up and coordinate the work done. Each school will be given a responsibility for running the project (global monitoring and coordination for the French secondary school, twinspace management for the Scottish school, follow-up of assessment for the Portuguese school, communication and timetable for the Romanian school).
In addition to acquiring basic written, oral and communicative skills, students will improve their cultural and inter-cultural abilities and will be able to experience European mobility as well as project work. We hope that this project will start or perpetuate environmentally responsible habits in the schools and in their areas of influence.
Students will thus take an active part in sustainable development and be world citizens, fully aware of the issues at stake now and in the future.
Such a project can also benefit teachers (improvement of inter-cultural skills, development of project dynamics within staff, cultural openness).
