Project Summary

Europe through my Eyes aims to bring together art, technology, history, geography and music education expertise from a range of European parties to develop creative, arts, historical and geographical skills and concepts. It aims to recognise good practice and strategies and raise attainment in these subjects as well as improve pupil confidence in using and applying their skills; in curiosity, critical thinking, experimentation, invention and creation. It aims to give teachers skills and confidence to teach these subjects in cross curricular, real life contexts; focusing on subject knowledge and pedagogy.
We aim to develop a positive attitude towards these subjects, including the acquisition of skills to; observe, explore, investigate, enquire, think critically, reason and communicate creatively. We want pupils to use skills effectively to problem solve but also with greater confidence. We strive to develop positive attitudes towards these subjects, and become confident in ones abilities. It will allow sound pedagogical approaches to historical, geographical, art, technology and music teaching and learning to be shared as well as developing essential resources to support high quality learning experiences through team teaching and developing tool kits and quality resources for all areas of the art, technology, history, geography and music
curriculum.
The participating schools; England (primary school), Spain (primary school), Italy (primary and secondary school), Romania (kindergarten) have all identified art, technology, history, geography and music as subjects they need to develop. Pupils aren’t performing so they want to address this to raise profiles and create positive attitudes towards the subjects both in performance of pupils and of teaching strategies. The project has been carefully tailored to meet all schools historical, geographical and creative arts needs, as well as developing awareness of and an understanding of similarities and differences between the culture, lifestyles, celebrations, festivals and traditions.
The project will embed into the curriculum with a cross curricular, thematic approach, taking the form of 6 topics across 2 years; Landmarks, My European Family, Nature, History of School / Local Area, My Local Community and Musical.
Through these topics we aim to develop skills in;
Geographical enquiry – inspire a curiosity and fascination about the world around them and their locality
Historical analysis – inspire a curiosity to know more about the past, equipping them to ask perceptive questions, think critically, and understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity.
Creativity – engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art and design as well as perform musically
Communicate – develop new computing skills and technologies.
Culture – exchange cultural information to develop awareness of history, traditions, customs and cultural events.
The planned activities will involve a wide range of practical, hands on, fun activities hopefully engaging all pupils regardless of their age or ability. They aim to enthuse and engage all pupils about learning with a real purpose and context. We hope to stimulate excitement, curiosity and a willing to
learn and discover more.
Through completing this project we aim to develop positive attitudes towards art, technology, history, geography and music, including the acquisition of higher-order skills, such as the ability to observe, explore, investigate, inquire, think critically, reason and communicate creatively. We envisage
that children will use their skills effectively and with confidence in daily life. In addition, we strive to develop a positive attitude towards art, technology, history, geography and music, seeing these subjects as a powerful way of looking at situations, and becoming confident in one’s own historical, geographical and creative arts ability.
We hope that this project will have some longer term benefits too. We hope that will be able to use the results and findings of the project to not only shape and mould the delivery of art, technology, history, geography and music activities in our schools but to also help to shape and mould the approach to teaching and learning in our schools. We hope to discover that teaching through this contextual, thematic approach we prove that children gain confidence, self belief, enjoyment and above all the necessary skills. We would therefore amend our general teaching and learning approach to delivering the national curriculum. This way we should help children acquire the necessary skills and confidence to reason,
problem solve, investigate, explore, think critically, question and communicate creatively in all areas of the national curriculum and in life in general.
