Project Summary
Today Europe has the chance and the need to integrate people who have had to flee from their own countries because of war and / or persecution. Due to cultural differences, Europe needs new and innovative methods of integration. One of the main goals was and is to reduce the fear of the unknown for European citizens and to spread the idea that integration can have a positive impact on European culture.
Migrants, refugees and asylum seekers do not have the same opportunities as people born in European countries. Some people never went to school or only for a short time, there are big gaps in education. But in many European countries, there are also very good experiences in the inclusive education of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers.
The participating organizations of the Strategic Partnership have been selected on the basis of their historical experience, as the importance of sustainable integration is important to them and has already been proven in their activities. These challenges we are facing make cooperation and the exchange of existing integration methods more important than ever. All selected partner organizations have extensive experience in inclusive adult education and youth work. The selected partner organizations of the strategic partnership are:
– Hessischer Volkshochschulverband e.V. (HVV), the institution for the further education and qualification of adult education institutions in Hessen, Germany.
– Studiefrämjandet Uppsala is one of the largest adult education associations in Sweden. Their focus is on non formal lifelong learning.
– Bayrakli Halk Egitimi Merkezi, based in Izmir, Turkey, is a public education center. They work with different NGOs, schools and other institutions.
– Familienakademie Mühlviertel as initiator and coordinator of the strategic partnership works in the field of adult education, especially with parents and families in Austria.
The main objective of the strategic partnership was to present and share best practice examples in inclusive adult education. The ideas and methods behind the examples were presented during three project meetings and a training activity. In addition, the partner organizations were asked to write down a detailed description of their best practice example and other examples of integrative education methods with the aim to try to incorporate the approaches presented in their environment. This should give all participating organizations the opportunity to receive acknowledged feedback on their work and to give them more ideas for their organization on the one hand. On the other hand this leads to a positive outcome of the strategic partnership and invites all stakeholders to actively participate in the project.
As a result, all practice examples, methods and competencies learned in the two years of collaboration were collected and described in a handbook. This should not only encourage participating partner organizations and stakeholders to implement some of the ideas in their organizations and environment, but also allow other adult education institutions to receive new information on how to achieve integration in other countries.
