Project Summary
Plastic pollution is a global problem. Mid Yell Junior High School and Baltasound Junior High school in the Shetland Islands, an archipelago between the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea. Together with College Le Dimitile in Réunion Island, in the Pacific Ocean and College le Budé on the edge of Lake Geneva will be working together on plastics. In their own localities pupils and teachers of Science, English, French and Geography and local outside agencies will collaborate to better understand the problems created by plastic pollution. As a result, they will develop their science skills and develop their understanding of our Planet Earth, through biodiversity and interdependence. Pupils will also develop as global citizens, thinking of the role they play in the world of today and the future of our planet.
Pupils will develop their communication skills using both their native and foreign languages. They will present what they have learned about their local plastic problem to their school and community using their native language. When travelling abroad, they will present in the foreign language they are learning at school. In small multilingual groups they will discuss possible short term solutions and together take part in surveys and beach cleans for example. Local pupils will work on the identified long-term solutions and report back on those during their next meeting. As pupils better understand the factors that affect their locality, in the North Isles of Shetland, Reunion Island and Switzerland, international collaboration between the different groups of pupils will reinforce their understanding that plastic is a global issue.
During transnational visits, pupils will learn about the traditions and culture of other European countries. They will develop tolerance and resilience and develop friendships which will hopefully continue beyond this project.
Ultimately, we would also like pupils’ understanding of plastic pollution to be such that they are actively involved in cleaning the environment, using less plastic, recycling it, reusing it, encouraging others to do the same and thinking about their impact into the future.
