Project Summary

Recent studies, at European level, show significant differences in the trajectory and academic results of youth under guardianship in residential care compared to the general population. Taking into account the role of training in social ascension, the failure to adequately resolve this aspect contributes to perpetuate the risk of exclusion in their life trajectories.
Project goals: The Sapere Aude project has the general objective of promoting the educational success of the young people under guardianship through a mentoring initiative specifically designed for that purpose and with the coordinated support of the staff of the residential centers and the schools in their environment. . The specific objectives of the project are: 1) To promote and improve the educational trajectories of the adolescents and young people in residential care.2) To improve the efficiency of the care services, proving that, with specific and coordinated actions of low cost, significant positive results can be obtained 3 ) Promote a more solidary and committed society through the involvement of volunteer mentors and the most immediate environment for young people.
Project partners: The 2-year project (September 2016-September 2018) has had the participation of 6 organizations from 5 European countries (Spain, France, Austria, Germany and Croatia), including a University and with three different profiles and complementary to each other: experience in supervised childhood, mentoring experience and experience in evaluation.
Description of activities: The beneficiaries of the project have been 1) supervised youth aged 12-17 who have improved their educational results, 2) social organizations interested in implementing initiatives to support these young people based on mentoring and 3) social actors from the environment of the young people in charge who have been sensitized with regard to the educational problem that surrounds a large part of the young people in charge, allowing the identification of areas of incidence and improvement. The main activities have been: 1. the creation of a specific Mentoring Training Manual (O2) to address the educational needs of supervised youth 2. A short-term training activity (C1) has been implemented for mentor trainers at the transnational level using the content of the Mentoring Training Manual previously prepared. 3. Pilot mentoring projects have been implemented focused on improving the school results of young people in charge in the 5 countries of the project for a duration of 1 school year (September 2017-May 2018) with the participation of 10-15 mentors and mentees for country. 4. Training has been held at the local level of mentors 5. The staff of the environment of the youth under guardianship has been actively sensitized and involved so that they offer support in improving the educational results of the young people in care, in coordination with the action taken to carried out by the mentors in the framework of the pilot projects carried out. 6. The benefits of pilot mentoring projects have been evaluated in improving the educational outcomes of the youth in care. 7 A Practical Mention Case Manual (O3) has been prepared. 8. A multiplier event (E1) was held in the form of an International Conference in Zagreb, Croatia, with an attendance of 98 participants presenting the results of the project. 9. Four transnational meetings have been organized. 10. A web page has been created to give visibility to the Project and make intellectual products accessible (http://sapereaude-project.com/) 11. Four newsletters have been created to disseminate the project process and its results 12. They have disseminated all the products at regional, national and European level through the network of contacts of the partner organizations.
Results and impact: The project has had an impact on young people in charge who participate in the pilot and receive the coordinated support of the mentor and the actors in their environment. The actors of the young people’s environment have become sensitized. The project organizations have seen their strategic line of work in mentoring promoted and social agents at European level have received content that allows them to develop social mentoring actions.
Benefits: Social organizations at the local, regional and international levels, through the Mentory Training Manual (O2) and the Practical Case Manual (O3), have free training resources to successfully implement a mentoring initiative, as well as the evidence of its effectiveness in the development of the academic results of the tutored youth. The administrations know the efficiency of this initiative and model and the participants of the pilot have experienced an initiative that has had an impact on the development of personal and interpersonal skills
