Project Summary
Project “Hello, I´m your new teacher” was the project of four partner schools:
1/ Katolícka spojená škola sv. Vincenta de Paul Levice – Slovakia – Physics
2/ Scoala Gimnazia Nr. 11 Stefan Octavian Iosif Brasov – Romania – Chemistry
3/ 2o Geniko Lykeio Neas Ionias Magnisias Volos – Greece – Math
4/ Hatsalan klassillinen koulu Kuopio – Finland – Biology
The target group of this project were children aged 12-15. The project lasted 24 months and was implemented from 1st November 2017 to 31st October 2019. Four training activities (C1 -C4) were supported by 2 meetings of the TNM management team in 2 project countries – Slovakia and Finland.
Aims:
The project was set on European priorities as well as European priorities in the national context.
European priorities: Strengthening the profile of the teaching profession and promoting the acquisition of skills and competences.
Priorities in the national context: To contribute to the attractiveness of the teaching profession and to improve the skills and competences of pupils in mathematics, to increase their literacy and to support their critical thinking.
The project carried a link between several subjects. The common denominator of the project activities were practical competences focused on natural sciences. We tried to motivate pupils and arouse their interest in natural sciences such as mathematics, physics, biology and chemistry. Working with ICT and using the English language was a matter of course.
The project consisted of project activities carried out separately at schools and joint cooperation activities within 4 Learning Activities (C1 – C4).
EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES – were the main part of the project and were gradually implemented at each school.
Our aim was to positively motivate children to become teachers. The project allowed pupils to try some forms of innovative pedagogical practices for themselves.
These activities gave children the opportunity to experience what it is like to explain subject matter to their peers. The children became teachers for 1 week. They taught selected science topics at each partner school. Through various methodologies / explanation, group work, workshop, practical tasks / the pupils carried out the teaching process during the 5 days of the Learning Activity. These activities were suitably complemented by thematic excursions.
The aim of the project was to make the teaching profession more attractive for children, but also to encourage the teachers to implement some new elements in their subjects.
Pupils and teachers participating in the project received a questionnaire at the beginning and at the end of each learning activity (C1 – C4). The initial questionnaires monitored the observed phenomena at the beginning of the project and the final questionnaires monitored the results. At the end of the project, a joint analysis from 4 countries was created to evaluate the project. The planned activities met the set objectives and priorities.
In addition, during the project, pupils were studying certain phenomena related to project priorities. The observed phenomena: Structure of educational systems of individual countries, compulsory education, types and levels of schools, types of schools according to the founder, structure of teaching, compulsory subjects, optional subjects, leisure activities, school facilities …
The best indicator of the positive impact of the project was pupils´ enthusiasm. They actively worked on the project tasks. Another positive outcome of the project was the changed attitude of parents toward the school, which they now understand to be an institution that seeks to raise its level through project activities. Built trust of other partners and the local community is also considered as the positive result. Other measurable results:
– increased quality of results in the subjects of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, but also geography, history / national competitions – regular placements among successful competitors /;
– improved English language skills and competencies of teachers;
– overcoming of language and social barriers through project activities.
Other positive impacts: Exchange of experience, skills and information among teachers. Improving ICT skills, creating the project outputs done by students. Improved cooperation between parents and school. High-quality presentation of the school to the local communities.
Project participants have also broadened their knowledge of nature protection and European cultural heritage. Children and teachers have established an international team. They have created friendships that can only be maintained through social networks for now, but it is possible that these partnerships will be renewed at a personal level in the future. Students participating in the project have clearly got a positive attitude towards the Erasmus + project and are highly likely to seek similar activities during their further studies at other schools and universities.
