Project Summary

The exchange:
We would like to organise an exchange project for 26 pupils (14/15 years old) from the Montessori Lyceum Amsterdam and for 26 pupils of the IGS (Integrierte Gesamtschule) Flötenteich in Oldenburg. The pupils will sleep in host families. First the pupils of Amsterdam go for five days to their partner in Oldenburg. A few weeks later the pupils of Oldenburg will come to Amsterdam (5 days as well). Four teachers (two of each school) will accompany the project. They meet each other during one weekend in autumn to prepare everything. During this weekend we will also check if and how eTwinning can be integrated in the project.

Language skills and social skills:
We want our pupils to learn the German / Dutch language in a meaningful context and to increase their knowledge about Germany / the Netherlands. Living in a host family for a week will increase the self confidence of most pupils. They learn to adapt to the new context. Their social skills will increase. The pupils will work in mixed groups on different products en do many activities together. This will increase their sense of cooperation. After the exchange, many pupils have new friends and some of them will probably stay in contact after the project.

Content: the Global Goals of the United Nations:
The pupils work during the two exchange weeks on 8 of the 17 Global Goals of the United Nations:
1. Good health and well-being (goal 3)
2. Clean water and sanitation (goal 6),
3. Affordable and clean energy (goal 7),
4. Sustainable cities and communities (goal 11),
5. Responsible consumption and production (goal 12),
6. Climate action (goal 13),
7. Life below water (to reduce pollution, to protect eco-systems, etc.) (goal 14) and
8. Life on land (to protect plants and animals) (goal 15).

Active working methods during the preparation period:
The pupils will be actively involved in the preparation of the project. Before the real exchange starts three preparation meetings will be organised. Active working methods will be used. The pupils read a reader about cultural differences (working method ‘expert groups’), exchange their expections with respect to the project, know each other better (through some ice-breaking games), discuss some sitations (situation cards; what would you do if… ) and prepare a city rally (in small groups again).
The German pupils prepare short presentations about the Global Goals, which they will present during the first week to the Dutch pupils. The German pupils also will learn some Dutch before the Dutch pupils come to Germany. At the IGS Flötenteich the puplis can choose the subject Dutch in the the year after the exchange. Many German pupils who participate in the exchange project choose for Dutch in the schoolyear after.

Activities concerning the Global Goals:
During the two exchange weeks different activities and creative working methods to work at the Global Goals will be organised. The pupils have many choices here.
– the German pupils hold short presentations about the Global Goals (general introduction)
– film (environment)
– visit of the Klimahaus at Bremerhaven. In this interactive museum the pupils feel the different climate zones and they learn about the (changing) climate and its problems.
– In Amsterdam they visit one museum or a sustainable project: the Ceuvel (Tour: The Circular City), the Scheepvaartsmuseum (exposition Raising Water), the museum ‘Fashion for Good’ (sustainable clothes) or the Rijksmuseum (watch paintings from the past and compare life then with modern life; task: make a painting of our city in 2030).
– both weeks the pupils work on different products which will be exhibited at the MLA at the last day of the exchange: selfmade games, a sustainable Amsterdam shopping guide, an informative short film (Explainity) about one Global Goal, a letter or e-mail to Greta Thunberg / Future for Fridays, to edit a painting (copy) of the Rijksmuseum (life in the past compared to life in 2030), etc.

Own input of the pupils during the exchange weeks:
During the exchange project the pupils will be actively involved by letting them independently prepare and carry out parts of the program:
– the receiving group prepares a lunch for the whole group at the day of arrival,
– city rally in both cities,
– short presentations about the Global Goals by the German pupils (in Oldenburg)
– cooking evening and dinner (in Oldenburg),
– different freetime activities in mixed groups (the pupils organise them largely by their own),
– the exhibition in Amsterdam on the last day of the exchange project.
