Project Summary

The project ‘Taste your culture’ is the result of the eTwinning project entitled ‘European Backpackers’ and carried out, in 2018-19, with the Greek and French teachers. Forty pupils aged 13 and 15 years old will participate in this project. It aims at making our pupils discover the culture of the two partner countries, especially in the architecture and gastronomy fields of their region. The idea is to give them the opportunity to improve and widen their language skills , their knowledge (discovery of the local architecture) and to lead them to share genuine everyday situations such as meals taken with host families, …

The project has a language objective but also an educational one, that is to make our teenagers be confronted with interculturality and alterity and to make them aware of their prejudices. The physical meetings will encourage them to be more tolerant because learning a language is not only to communicate it is also to accept the others with their differences and peculiarities. The aim is also to promote one’s identity through a common cultural heritage and to take responsibilities as a European citizen. Such a project must allow to make sense to learnings, to motivate the pupils to study and practice foreign languages and to be willing to discover unknown European countries. It consists in arousing their curiosity, in encouraging them to be fully involved in real situations of communication. This opening dimension must make them realize that the communication issue is not only in the classroom. It turns out that in both schools a great number of children come from severely disadvantaged families which makes quite difficult even impossible to take them abroad and which explains their lack of opennness to the outside world. That is the reason why it is necessary to obtain funding to support our project and to make our exchanges possible. The project will occur over two years. The main steps are :

2019-20 school year :
– Collaborative work on the eTwinning platform : creation of a survival kit composed of everyday and usual idioms and phrases spoken in the two countries ;
– Follow up of the research work on architecture and gastronomy : the two subjects that were rapidly dealt with the year before.
– First visit in France : collaborative work with pieces of information gathered during the outings : presentation of the sights on a tourist guide (Madmagz : an online magazine and a paper brochure) ;
– Assessment of the first meeting on a google doc. ;
– Second visit in Greece : working on the main two subjects : a collaborative work will be done with recipes that will be gathered in a book (Genially) ;
– Task completions : the two concrete final products will have to be finished.

2020-21 school year :
The aim is to broaden our subject about architecture to the European cultural heritage and to make the pupils aware of the notion of European identity, that is they are both Greek and European or French and European.
The main steps are :
– Collaborative work will be started from an eTwinning project ‘Lets’ share our European values !’ : A collaborative task will be carried out by groups of two pupils about the different country members of the European Union, about the European values as an introduction to the assessment of European buildings. The students will study the role and the function of the European institutions ;
– A meeting will be held by a European Deputy in both countries : comparisons, …
– A stay in Strasbourg where all the participants will meet : visit of the European Parliament ;
– A detailed report about the sights and places that will be visited : videos made by schoolmate groups.

Follow up of the project :
– regular self assessment of the project at different steps : distance exchanges (skype, visioconferences, meetings with the teachers responsible for the project with the principal to evaluate the activities (either going on or changing activities, a multiple choice survey after the visits on a google doc) ;
– measuring the teaching language and the cultural impact on the participants’ practices

Dissemination of the project : promoting and sharing experiences :
– All the works will be put on the website of the Greek and French schools, on eTwinning France (Facebook and Twitter) page ;
– Pupils’ presentation of their tasks and activities in their shools at the end of the school year : the aim is to talk about their experiences to the other classes in order to encourage them to participate in such mobility projects ;
– Exhibitions in the school library ;
– Press articles highlight the focus on the benefits of the project in the schools.
