Project Summary

Biochemistry: A view of two Countries
The two participating schools in the project are upper secondary schools: Rudbecksgymnasiet in Örebro, Sweden, and DIZ -ISIS Jožef Stefan in Trieste, Italy. Both schools provide education focused on biology, chemistry, and biochemistry. There were four main objectives for the project. The first was to strengthen and enhance an interest in science education among students at the upper secondary schools. The second was to strengthen teaching skills in the natural sciences, both in Sweden and in Italy. The third was to foster and develop scientific language skills in English for participating students and their teachers. The fourth main objective was to develop and improve understanding and appreciation of other cultures. This aim was to be achieved through lab projects that the students carried out together. The themes chosen for the lab projects were connected to important health and environmental issues for both schools and their home regions. The language used during the project was English. Throughout the project, the participating teachers and students communicated mainly over skype and other web tools. There was an ongoing dialogue about the lab themes and the common targets. Four learning teaching and training activities were planned and performed. The first in Trieste “Olive Oil”, the second in Örebro “Molecular Biology and Biochemistry”,the third in Trieste: “Wine and Agriculture”, and the fourth “Molecular Biology and Health”. A virtual learning teaching training activity replaced the fourth scheduled learning teaching training activity. Information about the project and its results were presented to the participating schools through presentations and reports. The long-term benefits included better understanding between cultures, and, through the development work, improved understanding of the curricula in biochemistry, chemistry and biology.
