Project Summary

The economic growth demand of the countries, the excessive growth in the production and consumption rate and the impact of technological changes also negatively affects the environment. The need for environmental protection all over the world is felt more and more every passing day. The protection of environment cannot be ensured by the law and regulations only but also it can be ensured by the collaboration of institutions and organizations of society on environment implementations.
According to researches on environmental systems in enterprises in Turkey were showed that the blue collar workers in Turkey aren’t included in terms of environmental laws and regulations but they have their place within in the system in certain multinational companies even their knowledge are not enough. In terms of environmental laws and regulations enterprises are not obligatory to train this blue collar workers. This situation showed that environmental management units need to be supported not only in Turkey also in Europe. This project aims to support and improve environmental management units by revealing a green collar environmental support staff model. Therefor a textbook and training materials, training videos decided to be prepared in accordance with this purpose. A Pilot Course has been organized to prepare the training videos as LTT Learning Teaching and Training activity in the project.
The project was carried out under the coordination of Turkish Metal Workers’ Union which is Turkey’s largest and most powerful union. The project partners and stakeholders have been selected upon need analysis based on. Primarily the institutions in EU countries specialized in environmental management in addition organizations from countries which has multinational companies that have active operations in Turkey. The project partners were ECOMAN – Ecological Management S.r.l. and SindNova (officially recognized independent association) from Italy and Sindicatul Liber Independent ICA Union from Romania.
A Pedagogical Committee were established to create appropriate training content and materials, which can be integrated with the system in Turkey and Europe. The pedagogical committee was made up of partners’ and coordinator organization’s experts and representatives, Faculty of Environmental Engineering academicians from Turkey and Italy, environmental experts from Ford Motor Company, Indesit White Goods Company and Çolakoğlu Metaruliji Iron and Steel Company from Turkey.
Content and materials for the training of green-collar environmental support staff that identified as a need for Turkey and Europe, has been prepared in the light of studies and technical visits which was made by the Pedagogical Committee. These training materials were designed as “Textbook For Capacity Building of Environmental Managemetn Units in Metal Sector”, CDs, training videos, social media accounts and Open Education Resources (OER) Platform. The textbook has been translated in four languages as Turkish, English, Italian and Romanian and printed as 600 hard copies and 400 soft copies in total. Soft copies of videos, slides and textbook documents were uploaded on Open Education Resources (OER) Platform to accessible for all interested parties. This platform is the project web-site which is www.cbem-ms.com. This platform will be accessible for five years following the end of the project.
20 trainees has been selected for 1 month Pilot Course program in University of Urbino campus “Carlo Bo” – Italy. The training which supposed to provide support to the environmental management units was consisted of two phases with a full content. 15 members were from Turkish Metal Workers’ Union and 5 members were from ICA union. Turkish Metal Workers’ Union has organized a meeting with trainees in their workplaces before to attend to the pilot course. Also Turkish Metal Workers’ Union organized an Italian language training for Turkish participants to be able to meet their basic needs during their 1-month stay. The training’s first phase was implemented in the form of theoretical training and the second phase of the training was carried out with participation of sector professionals in the form of study visits, workshops, round tables and open discussions.
The textbook has been used during the pilot course program. In the end of the pilot course a Europass certificate has been given to participants. The beneficiary organization and the partners organized “Info Days” to introduce the project in the project life-span. In order to disseminate all the project outputs to wider audience two conferences has been held one in Italy and one in Turkey as closing conference.
This events gathered all parties together and introduced them the training content and materials which was created and piloted within the Project. Also publicized the new green collar environmental support staff model which will affect the environmental management system.
