Project Summary

How will Europe become more familiar to young people? How do young people experience European values such as solidarity and non-discrimination? How can teenagers help shape Europe? Through participation.
We want to let young people communicate in a common language, to widen their intercultural horizons and their historical identity. Year eight students, as part of a joint school project, should gain experience in other European countries, leave their comfort zone and immerse themselves in the host family of another culture. 15 students from the Swedish Hjälmstaskolan in Vallentuna as well as the German Stecknitzschule in Krummesse will spend eight days working on issues of differences and similarities, sharing experiences and publicizing the results of their work in a blog.
The homestay method in combination with school experience using the common language English raises special challenges for the students. As young Europeans are more and more expected to be flexible and mobile, early intercultural experiences can only be of use in order to improve opportunities in future professional life. The natural use of foreign languages, the ability to navigate multicultural and multiprofessional teams, a reflected knowledge of cultural differences, and the elimination of intolerance and discrimination are goals that both business and European civil society expect. In order to do justice to this, in addition to political education, the appropriate teaching of methods and competencies, a practice-oriented testing of these abilities is required. The sooner the better. In the case of team-building measures in sports and music, the school can set a course in the context of an exchange with a foreign partner school. We also want to tackle joint teaching projects in the subjects of global studies and economics / politics. The focus is on dealing with the salt trade at the time of the Hanseatic League. In particular, the inclusion of out-of-school learning venues in the nearby Hanseatic cities of Lübeck and Wismar is to be used in order to promote the pupils from their familiar environment into appealing learning environments. The Stecknitz region is defined by salt transport from the salt pans of Lüneburg to the port of Lübeck, while Sweden was the largest exporter of herring in the Baltic Sea region. It was the interplay of the two goods that made preservation and storability possible that gave both cultures prosperity and a long period of peace. It is no coincidence that the Hanseatic League is often understood as the medieval model of today’s European economic area. This history, the inherent identity and the cultural heritage of both countries must be discovered, reflected upon and further developed for the young people. To make Europe more tangible and to make it start on your own doorstep.
