Project Summary

The project “Clean environment connects nations” is to be implemented by the students of three partner schools – Polish, Danish and Portuguese. The originator of the project are students and teachers of the John Paul II General Secondary School in Pawłowice. Thanks to this initiative, we want to improve our skills in the field of ecological awareness, be able to act on an international level in using English, and at the same time share knowledge in their own environment and in the European environment. All the schools expressed their interest in developing pro-ecological skills and attitudes of contemporary youth and the local environment, such as European, developing social and cultural competences. Portugal and Denmark face similar ecological problems as Poland. Both schools conducted the same survey which showed that the problem of low environmental awareness exists, although to a different degree. The project will involve 30 students aged 15-18, including students with disabilities (a student with a disability certificate (Asperger’s syndrome ), teachers from partner schools. During short international exchanges, there will be workshops in the field of ecology for students and one training trip for the teachers from Poland and Portugal to Denmark. Therefore we want to broaden our knowledge on pro-ecological attitudes. Activities will be supported by local organizations operating in the field of ecology in all countries. All the meetings are going to include the following parts : activities related to learning about the customs, culture and experiences of the host country, English classes prepared by the host school, ecological classes and workshops for students, meetings with an organization operating in the field of ecology and presentation of the activities, a summary of the activities in the form of “Powerpoint” presentations, quizzes and talks. In the periods between international meetings, students will develop their skills and share knowledge through demonstrations and trainings organized for local schools, kindergartens and social organizations, local environment and residents, as well as local authorities. The important part of the project are campaigns for the environment (“Festival promoting an ecological lifestyle”, “Flashmob in Krakow”, “Classes at the primary school on waste segregation”, “Campaign promoting an ecological lifestyle”, campaign “Zero Waste” in Denmark ). In the language area, students will improve their competences by participating in English language classes combined with specialist vocabulary concerning ecology and environmental biology, they will use English during workshops and classes. We will also use distance learning opportunities (via the E-Twinning platform and Skype video conferences). Results such as presentations, instructional videos, posters, a multilingual dictionary, a geocoaching field game, will be based on developing our language skills. Students will collect materials on the ecology of their countries, in particular they will deal with the history of ecology and the description of the ecological awareness system in the country and within the school. The implementation of the project will include such organizations as: the Pawłowice Commune Office, the Pszczyna Forest Inspectorate, the Thermal Waste Processing Plant in Krakow. The implementation of the program will improve both the educational and ecological conditions of all three schools. These activities will contribute to the promotion of the school and the European Union in the local environment as well as in the region. Activities such as raising the ecological awareness of children, adolescents and adults, will enable shaping sustainable pro-ecological attitudes among students. Furthermore it will increase the sense of environmental impact and our responsibility for its condition. All workshops and training within the program will improve the teachers’ qualifications related to different subjects and educational work especially in the area of the environmental issues. Using teaching methods and enriching them with a cultural method will result in long-term cooperation between Poland, Denmark and Portugal. After the program, the teachers and the students will keep in touch via email and will be open to the next programmes.
