Project Summary

Climate Aid – A cooperative project between Sannarpsgymnasiet, Halmstad (S), and Katholisches Oberstufenrealgymnasium, Zams (A), about the consumer society and global warming effects and consequences on the ecosystems of oceans and Alpine landscape

Alarming reports about climate change and environmental issues are becoming increasingly commonplace, as if the industrial revolution and globalisation affects the natural systems of the world more. The Paris agreement (2015) and the climate meeting COP24 in Katowize (December 2018) witnessed the importance of tackling environmental questions. The fact that climatic changes worsen environmental and resource problems are widely recognised and discussed, but many individuals consider that there is still too little action from the political and industrial sectors.

One individual who is tired of the situation and taken up the fight against the passivity of the powers-that-be in one of mankind’s life-deciding questions, is the young, Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg. She wants that the climatic changes are seriously by everyone. Accompanying her, she has increasing numbers of teenagers around the world who have allowed themselves to be inspired in the fight for the survival of the planet. Greta has become a global ambassador for the environment and we – students and teachers at Sannarpsgymnasiet and KORG – have also become inspired by her work and wish to continue in the same spirit, by the acquiring of fact-based and real knowledge within our chosen area in the form of a project.

One of the aims of Climate Aid is that the students at Sannarpsgymnasiet in Halmstad, Sweden, and Katholisches Oberstufengymnasium (from now on known as KORG) in Zams, Austria, will examine the affects of global warming and the consequences for Sweden’s seas and waterways as well as Austria’s alpine landscapes and glaciers, respectively. In order to do this seriously and in a rewarding manner for the students, the respective groups of students will conduct field studies in the two schools.

A central aim for our educational idea in both Halmstad and Zams is to create lifelong commitment by individuals to become environmentally responsible. We would like to do this in a way which is vivid, real, and based on experience. Research clearly demonstrates a relationship between tangible personal experiences and long-lasting, permanent knowledge. Also, by reading in an interdisciplinary way as will occur on this project, an understanding of the entirety of the subject area will be created for the students involved and the acquisition of knowledge will activate many of the students’ different abilities. The school subjects which are to be initially included are Biology, Chemistry, Germans, English, Geography, and Music.

In order to spread knowledge and the desire to become engaged in questions regarding the climate and environment, we consider music as a perfect medium to reach both the public and other students at the two schools. Since students who are included in the Erasmus-project study the Natural Sciences Programme (with a focus on Music), a part of the project will consist of spreading the environmental message with the help of their knowledge of music. Their musical abilities constitute a solid foundation to reach out to the public audience in association with the planned Climate Aid concerts in the respective cities.

The general basis for the entire project is contained in the overall mission of secondary schools (as contained in the GY11 teaching plan), and is stated to create individuals who are environmentally conscious as well as conveying the importance of the responsibility of every individual in environmental work. Furthermore, we would like to promote the German language as an attractive choice for future students. By mediating contact with German-speaking teenagers and visiting them in their home environments, creates knowledge and interest in German-speaking countries in mainland Europe and for the German language itself.

An important part of the project is that we are placing a large amount of focus on reaching out to partners outside the confines of the school. This will occur by genuine and real contact with key individuals at the University of Halmstad and other communities in the region of Halmstad. We will urge that our teaching will generally strive to clearly tie-in the project within society. In the project, we wish to highlight the “distribution effect” which is a particularly important aspect, which clearly takes its conveyance in the Climate Aid concerts. Close cooperation with the University and community is to continue long after the end of the initial project.
