Project Summary

The world scenario opens more space for joint action of Portuguese speaking countries towards globally assert their cultural values. With its current 244 million speakers, mostly youngsters, and population growth rates that evolve according to the UN, in the order of 44% by 2050, in the near future will represent about 4% of world population.
The civil society movements around the lusophony and CPLP are many and growing. In Europe, besides the inhabitants of Portugal, the number of Portuguese speaking in other European countries is quite significant.

The project Compass:Lusofonia Europeia was born from the perception that there are a number of civil society movements working to promote the Portuguese language and the lusophony cultures in Europe, which however are not “connected” to each other. Therefore, there was the need to map out and join them in a single platform that promotes a more join action, best practices, networking, cooperation and the creation of synergies and opportunities of training and capacity building. Having all these needs in mind, five partners- who had never worked together before but advocated the promotion of the lusophony in Europe- decided to join and implement this project: Conexão Lusófona ( Portugal ) ; Zarpante (France); Berlinda (Germany ) ; Bomdia ( Luxemburg ) and Inquietudo (Austria).

For the implementation of this project, three meetings happened ( based on Non-Formal Education methodologies) and were developed – for the sharing of best practices- three main activities extremely relevant and complementary to each other : i ) mapping of associations that are promoting the Portuguese language in Europe (that are now in the web platform “Nós na Europa”), to publicize their work and stimulate their interaction, ii) realization of a video with testimonials and inputs of main actors of the lusophony in Europe and iii) creation of a publication that shows the process of this project and compiles some of the contributions and recommendations of the lusosophy actors.
These three achievements can thus serve as a basis for a joint strategic in a more concerted promotion of the lusophony in Europe.

Regarding the main results and impacts of the project we identify the increased exchange of experiences and knowledge among Associations that are working with the topic of lusophony in Europe and the resulting synergies and cooperation for future projects between them. One of the short-term impact is the possibility to give a voice to the associative movement and the lusophony actors in Europe. With all these mechanisms, all the conditions to promote even more the discussion on current issues related to the lusofophy and Europe are created, such as: integration; citizenship; democratic participation; multilingualism; wider dissemination and promotion of the language and lusophony cultures in the European contex and also create a better and more effective means of dissemination of these cultures and recognition of their role in the building of the European project .
Last but not least, a long-term benefit will be the real possibility of creating a joint strategy (built from “the bottom to the top”with the contributions of all these actors) to an increasingly concerted promotion, efficient and effective lusophony in Europe.
