Project Summary
The idea of this project appeared after attending the TCA seminar in Poland ’’School to school (S2S) partnerships- how to plan an excellent project’’ for headmasters and teachers of special schools. Four organisations – Pärnu Päikese School from Estonia, Riga Valda Avotina elementary school-development centre from Latvia, Institut pre pracovnu rehabilitaciu obcanov so zdravotnym postihnutim from Slovakia, Posebno osnovno uciliste “d-r Zlatan Sremec “-Skopje from Macedonia chose each other as partners willingly during the seminar in Poland. All four participants from different organisations agreed on the subject and objectives of the “Coping with students challenging behaviour” project. “Coping with students challenging behaviour” projects main objective is to exchange good practices. Main priorities is strengthening the profiles of the teaching professions. In general, our project will provide lasting benefits to teachers and other school specialists who work with the target group of students. Our schools need to gain knowledge in this specific area. The number of students with disabilities and challenging behaviour is rising. We will try to improve teaching process in our institutions. This improvement will be reached with the help of activities, which are focused on the topic of dealing with challenging behaviour.
Profile of participants:
Pärnu Päikese School in Estonia is a municipal school part of the city of Pärnu. The school accepts pupils from across the city and, when possible, also welcomes pupils from Pärnu county subject to available spaces. Pärnu Päikese School is a secondary school, where the studies are based on the simplified national secondary school curriculum set out for special needs and learning disabilities.
Riga Valda Avotina elementary school-development centre from Latvia offers special education for children with learning difficulties. These children very often have behaviour problems.
Institut pre pracovnu rehabilitaciu obcanov so zdravotnym postihnutim from Slovakia comprises following departments:
– Secondary vocational school is a part of Institute for working rehabilitation for disabled people.
– The department of health care and therapeutical rehabilitation which offer to our students – medical and acute services, which are in control of institution doctor and nurses, prophylactic care, therapeutical rehabilitation.
– Centre of social and labour rehabilitation provide assistance for individuals with disabilities, occupational therapy, counselling, psychological services and special training.
Posebno osnovno uciliste “d-r Zlatan Sremec “-Skopje from Macedonia for children with intellectual disabilities, autistic spectrum disorders.
4 people from every institution go to mobilities, they are teachers, special educators and support staff who work daily with students with challenging behaviour. Indirect participants will be teachers, who will not travel to mobilities, students (pupils), parents as project influence benefits and improvements towards their children. Also local specialists as every school will let them know about this project and the results. Every school will write to local newspaper to let locals know.
Activities:
Activities during the mobilities are going to be school introductions, open lessons, workshops, presentations, outdoor activities, visitations to other institutions and management team meetings.
Methodology:
All partners take part in project meetings. Project management team will evaluate project progress and impact, all participants share experiences and best practices. Project coordinator will monitor fulfillment of the tasks, cooperating with the people responsible for the teams.
Results and impact:
-Presentation about the project to parents and to local special educators and teachers
– Every school will spread information via media (school web page, social network, local newspaper)
– Decrease in the number of students dropping out of the school in 2 schools
– New tools, knowledge to teachers and school´s support workers about different approaches and techniques how to prevent and deal with students challenging behaviour
– Improvement of student´s results in 2 schools
– Participating teachers English skills improvement
– EU projects experience gain
Long term benefits are: development on every schools environment and functioning in general. Teachers will be able to identify causes and deal with situations using simple interventions to diffuse difficult and potentially aggressive situations. Teachers increased confidence, enhanced knowledge and competencies in different methods and approaches in managing and coping with challenging behaviour. For schools there will be local, national & international school image promotion, increase of attractiveness, competitiveness, implementing new teaching strategies also promotion of lifelong learning and applying for EU projects.
