Project Summary

In our project, “Creating a 3D-virtual environment about EU cultural heritage to help building a stronger Europe”( EU3D) Spanish and German students created 3D-virtual environments about different topics that have to do with the EU’s cultural heritage and the effects of digitalization for EU countries and their citizens. Example topics are different European customs, European settlements and the changing faces of communication across borders.

Our project came out of the necessity for addressing two important issues. Firstly rising awareness of students, teachers and EU citizens for the common EU cultural heritage and the benefits of a strong European Union and secondly improving digital competences of students and teachers.

For our project fulfilled three objectives:
1. Students, teachers and parents developed a deeper understanding of EU cultural heritage and its value for us as citizens.
2. Students looked at the past and also at the future of the EU. They closely examined the effects of digitalization on communication.
3. Students worked on their digital competences, learned how to effectively learn in an online environment, learned to code and learned to research information and to present information.

The EU3D project was targeted at students from year 8 till year 12. Each year 13-14 students between the age of 16 and 18 were chosen from each school to participate in two project meetings and two online collaboration phases. These students were divided into four international groups. Group 1 created a 3D-virtual environment, group 2 designed 3D-virtual objects which were placed in the 3D-virtual environment and groups 3 and 4 researched EU heritage and the influence of digitalization on culture, labour markets and the feeling of belonging. They then created virtual posters, audio files and videos which are made available in the 3D-virtual environment. The groups were supervised by a contact teacher. However, our main aim was to promote independence and self-regulation. We therefore askewd the groups to organize their workflow themselves.

The project will also included regular lessons at the two participating schools. Art, ICT, Social Studies and Technology classes will teach units connected to the project. Students were asked to help to create the 3D-virtual environment, design 3D-objects and to research EU cultural heritage and to create content.
The 3D-virtual world are made available to the public for interested users to look at.
The quality of the projects was ensured by the fact that there were three skilled teachers at each school responsible for the project. Each teacher brought different expertise. The teachers were be trained during one training meeting. We had planned a second meeting but due to the travel restrictions after March 2020 we were not able to go through with the second meeting.
