Project Summary
The competence “communication in the mother tongue” is one of the European Union’s key competences for lifelong learning. The migration crisis across Europe is bringing new pupils into schools, especially allophone children, who do not speak the language of their teachers. These children find themselves at a disadvantage in the face of this situation, due to a lack of training, translation and knowledge of migratory movements.
We know from research on plurilingualism the importance of not creating a linguistic break in a migratory journey in order to facilitate inclusion and successful learning.
There are tools, games, designed to facilitate the arrival of allophone children in their host class. Few advocate the promotion of their mother tongue, which is often the subject of glottophobic manifestations. Those who do may have a stigmatizing effect: creating a feeling of difference by caricaturing the “cultural identity” of these children. As the best researchers on plurilingualism have pointed out, these children need to disappear from the group in order to integrate better.
The challenge of DAY 1 IN EUROPE is to develop tools that will enable those involved in education to use mother tongues as a resource for all pupils, and not as a marker of difference.
The Greek, Belgian, French, Italian, Irish and Maltese partners have all already worked on projects promoting the inclusion of allophone children in their host countries. By pooling the productions of their previous projects, supported by linguists, anthropologists, sociologists, philosophers and writers, and backed by the national education authorities, they are creating a European training area for teachers working in schools to explore mother tongues as a playful educational and cultural resource.
They have defined 4 work spaces in which language and culture can be expressed in all these forms: cooking and food, singing, correspondence, play.
Over a period of three years, DAY 1 IN EUROPE allows the creation of 5 productions:
LUNCH BOX, MUSIC BOX, MAIL BOX, PLAYING BOX and LANGUAGE BOX based on experimentation, research and exchanges of good practices in the sector. The final beneficiaries are children and their families, whether migrants or refugees. The target audiences are teachers working with children aged 6-11. The tools are developed in 4 languages: English, Italian, French and Greek.
The educational boxes are proposed in digital format integrating :
4 training modules (between 40 and 80 thematic action sheets) with videos / sound tablets / interviews / comic strips and other forms of feedback, 4 pedagogical tutorials and 1 certification training course accompanied by 1 recommendation booklet for the National Education system.
At the end of the project, the teachers have at their disposal methodologies and tools to better communicate and cooperate with allophone migrant mothers and children.
The intellectual productions are disseminated in 6 dissemination events, and in 3 types of networks (European education networks, proposed in particular by the EU and the Erasmus + programme: Eurydice, EPALE, School Education Gateway, E-Twinning, Kamilala…, European cultural networks…): LIKE, IETM, ENCC, trans europe Halles…, the European active social inclusion networks on the integration of migrants in Europe: EMN, ENSIE, ECML/CELV…)
The pedagogical tools are tested in two training sessions by teachers, families, members of the national education system of the different countries, professionals of informal education (artists, mediators, social actors).
All stages of the project are evaluated by specialists in education and social inclusion. The tools produced will involve 5,000 European education professionals from the second year of the project and thus promote the integration of families.
The associated partners will validate the certification of the training and introduce it in year 3 in the national teacher training programmes.
