Project Summary
K2 project: Education for Sustainable Development
We live in a world that is geared towards globality. Our students can easily communicate with anyone worldwide because of the high level of technological progress. Nevertheless, it seems that an understanding and knowledge of the various possibilities and conditions in the various corners of our planet is insufficiently developed. Moreover, there is an urgent need to be aware of the consequences of our global action and “inaction” and to emphasize that we all live in the same world.
By participating in this project, we have improved students’ understanding in that way that they see themselves as self-confident individuals, responsible citizens, and effective contributors both to their local community and to the global community. This insight helps our youth to play a full and active role in the world of tomorrow and to contribute to mutual understanding across cultures.
Multinational cooperation has brought different perspectives and realities into the big “whole” and made it clear that only cooperation beyond one’s own borders helps to secure a humanly appropriate future for our planet (see “Fridays for Future”). Because the goal must remain the same with every consideration: we all only have this one world worth preserving! Thus, our role in the global community must be comprehensively and meaningfully interpreted.
The selected sub-topics have offered the opportunity to develop a sustainability that enables follow-up generations to deal adequately with future challenges:
The sensible treatment of our urgently conserved nature;
Global democracy learning;
Equal opportunities and equal rights;
Resources and climate change;
Cultural and biological diversity
“One World”;
There were two transnational project meetings and five mobilities. The following activities were planned and carried out to deal with the content:
Various documentaries, interviews, podium discussions, PPT presentations, workshops, collaboration with experts, company visits, concrete contacts and exchange with people from the global South. The presentation of the most important results took place as an overall consideration during the second transnational project meeting.
Participating nations / schools:
Secondary School Papenteich / Germany (coordinating school)
SCOALA GIMNAZIALA NO. 79 / Romania
Zespol Szkol nr 2 im. Stanislawa Lema Gimnazjum nr 4 / Poland
Lycée Polyvalent Paul Mathou /
II SS PUBLIO VIRGILIO MARONE / Italy
Agrupamento de Escolas Rosa Ramalho / Portugal
All sub-topics were worked on in the framework of project-type learning to impart relevant core competences. Learning in a multinational context has helped to develop a sustainable understanding of securing the world of tomorrow.
Furthermore, the recognition of the global challenges has prompted all persons involved to take active action.
The project work on ESD has been developed as an international school community that is inclusive and accepts diversity, as diverse as our planet is.
The project has improved the skills of all participants in the use of new media and technologies and communication in a modern language.
Overall, this project will have a positive effect on all schools in the future, as the way of thinking about global learning and perspective will undergo a change, as concrete examples have shown that current patterns of action are not enough to secure the world of tomorrow. The work in a project-like form increasingly changes the school’s own curriculum and focuses more on interdisciplinary learning. The topics to be worked on can be well integrated into the building blocks of the curriculum mobility, so that here too the school’s work plans have to be changed accordingly. The contents of this curriculum are relevant in all participating nations, so this project will change all work schedules. For subsequent years, there is the opportunity to use topics, results and products over and over again.
Another highlight is the awarding of certificates and the issuing of the Europass for the participating students, which can be of great importance for their career and portfolio.
Ultimately, the project has aroused immense sustained interest in the visit of the Lower Saxony Minister of Education. The OBS Papenteich has recently been recognized as a sustainable environmental school in Europe and has received the “Eco-Schools International Green Flag Award”.
