Project Summary

The project “Promoting empowerment of VET system through sustainable entrepreneurial initiatives in quality pig breeding” (BREED) will offer to to VET learners the learning opportunity to confront a sustainable business in quality pig breeding. The project is promoted by expert partners in the European countries Italy, Poland, Greece, Portugal and Lithuania proposes outdoor quality pig breeding as area for sustainable VET entrepreneurial initiatives.
Pig farming in Europe has to face three major challenges of sustainability: economic, social and environmental.
Th BREED project addresses aspects of all these three areas of sustainability, as a basis to improve productivity and competitiveness of pig production systems as well as environmental sustainability, and to enhance consumer acceptability by addressing animal welfare and product quality. Pig breeding is suitable for VET also for other aspects. Despite the importance of economic aspects, pig breeding requires nowadays high quality work, good job satisfaction and a positive image of livestock production. These sectoral requirements of quality fully match with the identified target of quality VET work as lever for the improvement of VET system.
The project BREED aims at fostering the resilience of the pig industry from local to European level, by training new and existing breeders, via an integrated action addressing all the three pillar of sustainability (animal welfare, profitability and environmental impact) equally in an inter- and transdisciplinary approach. The action proposed will furthermore promote empowerment through the integrated and multidisciplinary method, fully exploiting the possibilities offered by the digital area and the socials, hence sharing and participation.
