Project Summary

The following project entitled “Environment, Climate Protection – in school and everyday life” is backed by a consortium consisting of three partner institutions. Main applicant is the Thomas-Mann School Dardesheim, Germany. Project partners are the XY School of Ciechanów, Poland as well as the Blanca d´Anjou School out of El Perelló, Spain. The goal of this Erasmus+ projects is to bring students closer to the topic of sustainability in the European context. More specifically, we have two main goals. First, we want to underscore the importance of sustainability as well as climate protection as key elements for the longevity of planet earth. As recent developments demonstrate, there is already a general awareness among the youth, e.g. through the demonstration “Friday for Future”. Second, we aim to broaden the cultural horizon of students by going beyond the respective home regions to other European countries, which nicely feeds into the European idea in general.
The idea for this project originates from a working group “Bienen Dutt” at our school in Dardesheim. This working group consists of ten students from various classes. These students worked with a local beekeeper, who volunteered to work with this group. In addition, our local school cooperation coordinated the sale of the produced honey. Through studying bees, the interplay of eco-systems as well as the consequences of their destruction can be exemplified and consequently studied. The working group “Bienen Dutt”, thus, serves as an initial step to tackle the topics of this projects that are concerned with sustainability (e.g. wind energy, bio diversity, and water treatment). Our partner schools in Poland and Spain will undoubtedly benefit from our experience in this working group. Additionally, we have sustained a cooperation with the school in El Perelló, Spain for numerous years. This cooperation focused on renewable energies with a focus on a local wind farm, here in Germany. Both communities in Spain and Germany are in rural regions, whereas our partner school in Poland is located in an urban area. These fundamental differences can facilitate fruitful discussions on how sustainability can be realized in rural and urban areas, respectively. Additionally, each school aims to implement the topics of sustainability and ecology into the curricula. This also aids the illustration of such a complex topic to the students. Furthermore, different activities (e.g. visiting a honey farm, & actively saving energy) will be implemented to support the student interest in climate and its related topics. The conversation between the students should, however, not end there. They should also take the topics of sustainability and ecology as well as the European dimension of this overarching project outside of the classroom and to their family and friends to raise awareness of the magnitude of this project. During the project, the schools in Germany, Poland, and Spain will have three activities, lasting five days each. The students will consequently not only learn the theoretical concepts, but also the practical implications as well as applications. Each partner institution will have ten students and two instructors participating in this project. In order to provide authentic cultural exchange, we aim to have host families, instead of traditional accommodations. The project partners welcome the idea that this project through its intercultural exchange can serve as a conversation starter about environment and sustainability, in addition to the active involvement in the local community.
