Project Summary
Context and backgroung project:
The architecture from the XIXth century to nowadays shares many similarities across Europe, but also local specific features. Styles, techniques, technology and societies evolve over time, influencing each other, additional factors that shape urban planning being sociology and environmental issues. All this makes the study of European architecture worthy of interest for teachers and students.
Partners and participants :
Students, teachers from 7 schools (secondary education) in 7 countries : France, Italy, Spain, Finland, Romania, Poland and Sweden. Hosting families, other members of the educational communities of the partner institutions and all the professionals (elected officials, guides, photographers) invited to take part in the project are also essential participants.
Type of activities:
Creation of the website and of the facebook page, of a calendar and a logo
Discovery of meaningful monuments and buildings (including the schools themselves) in each partner country (through visits and/or research work), presentations (slideshows, photo exhibitions, “Time’s up” game cards, ).
Workshops / conferences / visits / survey to improve knowledge on architecture, photography, social values of monuments, impact of monuments or buildings on the population, urban planning and policies, ecological aspects of architecture and urban planning, geometry, golden section and perspective in architecture, local geology.
Methodology:
Students worked in pairs (rarely in groups of three) in their own school in order to produce the expected assignments. During the meetings, the visits were guided by students or teachers from the hosting institution, or by outside professionals, and conferences / presentations were conducted by external partners. All the students welcomed by the organizing partner attended these activities, as well as at least some of the hosting students (depending on their school obligations). “European” articles about these activities were always written in mixed teams (that means at least 3 different nationalities), under the responsibility of professors from different institutions. Multidisciplinary activities (History, Geography, Sociology – and Mathematics, Chemistry, Psychology) were consistent with educational rules of each country. Students’ productions were integrated in the book project of the partnership.
A meeting was organized in each country. Four to five students from each country were invited to each meeting: they presented their productions and worked together on the writing of articles among which the most relevant were included in the book.
The transnational meetings helped to refine the objectives of future activities, to address logistical or practical issues, to bring the group of professors in charge of the project closer together and therefore to enhance the involvement in the project.
Description of the results and medium/ long impacts:
– the productions (the book, the calendar,….) are consistent with the specifications decided by the partners. In addition, tourist brochures marrying architectural aspects and geological data and exhibition posters containing some of the contents of these leaflets were printed.
– (for students) : a better knowledge about architecture, History, Sociology, photography, etc. ; improvement of open-mindedness, of languages skills, of self-management skills in a project.
Long term benefits :
– (for students and teachers) : to be able to work in an international team, to learn about and respect the cultural differences with each partner ; to learn more about European educational systems and test new methods.
– (for the educational community) : Strengthen the feeling of being a European citizen ; to encourage more teachers and students to take part in international projects.
– (for the schools) : to create a European network in order to develop exchanges ; to extend and strengthen their local radiance.
– Possibly future partnerships with tourist information desks who might be interested in our brochures or posters, or in a similar type of product.
