Project Summary

“The Festival as a Form of Education” is a project that uses the potential of a cultural event to create diverse educational activities. The project focuses on exploring, verifying and extending the educational potential of the festivals. Just as the offer of festivals is varied and complex (film screenings, meetings, discussions, workshops, debates, courses, lectures, panels), the educational possibilities of such an event are so multi-level. During the festival, you can almost unknowingly learn about the culture and the situation of other countries and nationalities, engaging in particular events one can not only explore specific aspects of culture, but also gain specialist knowledge or specific skills, or become a volunteer festival and learn about the production of cultural events.

The project was implemented by the festival organizers focusing on the presentation of Asian cinematography. Such narrowing of topics allowed for a profound examination of the issues related to the presentation of the output of other cultures, as well as the development of specific solutions and tools.

The basic goal of the project is to initiate the exchange of experiences in the field of educational projects and to develop new publicly available educational projects, which all partners will be able to use equally. The project served to transfer knowledge about the culture, customs, and political situation of Asian countries through contemporary and current cultural texts and the universal language of cinema. The supreme goal of the project is to fight discrimination, racism, aggression, and violence against migrants. The project is also intended to encourage adults to develop new interests, passions, skills, initiate a desire for development and further education.

As a result of the project, an educational platform called Asian Cinema Education was launched with the first open-access course dedicated to selected issues of Far East cinematography. Also, open webinar courses in the field of film criticism and journalism were carried out. As part of the project, a database of good educational practices concerning cinema and culture of Asian countries was created, which is available to all institutions seeking inspiration to conduct classes or workshops related to Asia. An extremely important result of the project is an attempt at the development of a model related to solving problems such as racism and lack of tolerance. An attempt to find an answer to the question of how to use the festival for anti-discrimination activities. How a cultural event can counteract racism – how to teach what racism is, how to recognize it, react, what are the effective forms of combating racism, how to influence the formation of civic attitudes. A significant project activity was also training for leaders of migrant communities.
The project assumed a diverse structure of participants – from migrants to organizers of cultural events. The majority of the recipients of the project were people interested in expanding knowledge about the achievements of Asian cinema, a permanent audience organized by festival partners, people interested in other cultures, seeking inspiration and knowledge about the contemporary world.
