Project Summary

Our project “From here, from there, let’s share our lives, let’s share the Earth” was about the issue of young migrants and refugees in Europe. The aim of the project was to improve the inclusion of migrants and refugees and to fight against preconceived ideas, discrimination, racism, xenophobia or social isolation. We wanted to promote and share values such as tolerance, open-mindedness and solidarity. Two schools were involved in the project : liceo scientifico statale “E. Fermi”, Bari, Italy and lycée Pierre-Gilles de Gennes, Digne-les-Bains, France. Twenty-four Italian students and four teachers, twenty-four French students and five teachers and eight migrants took part to the project. The students were aged 17-18. The project was intended to last one year (September 2019 – September 2020). We had planned two transnational meetings involving education staff, students, young migrants and / or refugees from each partner country. Each student was matched with another foreign student in order to give him/her hospitality and to create personal connections. The first meeting took regularly place in November 2019 in Digne-les-Bains. The second meeting had been organized for March 2020 in Italy but because of the pandemic situation it was not allowed to travel abroad so the project was extended twice to two years and four months (from September 2019 to December 2021). As a consequence, the activities organized by the Italian school took place online from January 2020 to March 2020. Because of Covid, it was not possible to have the second meeting on presence even after the second extension. Each meeting, both the one on precence and the one online, included cultural and/or sport activities to enable participants and young migrants to share moments and to cooperate. As a matter of fact, students had the chance of listening directly to the experiences of the migrants and to learn more about their needs and the reasons of their moving to European countries. On the other hand, migrants had the opportunity to learn about the culture and the langage of their host country. Actually it was an intercultural and involving life experience for all of them that has created connections among them : some students and migrants are still in touch. The French and Italian activities included meetings with institutional representatives that gave them information about their policy of welcoming refugees and migrants. A video which all the participants took part to was made to promote tolerance and some podcasts were made to develop also their creative skills. The activities were in English so all the participants improved their English. Through this project, all the participants have deepened their knowledge about the phenomenom of migration, have broadened their intercultural view of life and have strengthened their sense of community as members of the European Union.
