Project Summary
Final results (summary)
How to achieve integration ? How to make foreigners part of society in their new country ? How to make them feel home in the
new country of choiced. A team guide from the German Institute of Political Education and Democracy introduced several
methods to us how one can make people come together and get along. It quickly came clear that often enough language
barriers are one of the major obstacles with regard to integration. As not all of our Italian guests were skillfull with English me-
diating was needed. The teachers from Italy helped when language problems came up. But as soon as everybody knew what
today it was no more a big problem, just do what you think might be the right thing to do. Speaking was no more required, non-
verbal communication was enough. Every participant involved in his group activity did what he thought he might have to do so
to get the problem contained. As well this lead the participants to the idea that language could as well be simplified, simple
words, simple sentences and not complex sentences or complicated words should be enough. Especially when working with
children games might be the right and appropriate form to help them get integrated and find their way into society. Having over
a guest – a former student of our school who came to Germany as a refugee and who has been pretty successful in her caree
so far – the students learned that it also depends on the refugee’s social competences: Is he ready to get along, is he ready to
join in and do his utmost to fit in ? Is he ready to make progress in terms of using the national language of his new home coun-
try ? Well, she was. And was making big efforts to lead her way to success and get along. As this is a very important topic we,
that is our Italian partner and us from Germany, have plans to continue work on the topic – as soon as Covid allows us to do so.
Music, pottery, quizzes or puzzles can as well be activities that might lead to successful integration. When working together, you
have to get along. You as part of the entire are responsible that your group is successful.
