Project Summary
Health & Safety Plus Agenda 21 Strategic Partnership was to enable schools of similar profiles but different vocational subjects and backgrounds to work together to produce an eLearning course which can be used to improve awareness of Health & Safety issues.
The Partners are Redcar & Cleveland College (‘the Beneficiary’), Lycee Professionnel Albert Londres of France (Partner 1’), Seinajoen koulutuskuntayhtyma of Finland (‘Partner 2’), I.I.S “Via Lentini, 78” of Italy (‘Partner 3’).
The Beneficiary of the project was introduced to Partner 1 through an existing French-English twinning. Partners 1 and 3 had worked together on two Comenius partnership projects since 2010. The results were educational videos and slideshows. In addition, Partners 1 and 3 had also worked on projects which helped find internships for carpentry students. The Beneficiary and Partner 2 were invited to attend an information meeting about the new Erasmus Plus key action programmes in order to disseminate information about the projects and partnerships initiated by Conseil régional d’Auvergne.
It was intended that the first transnational meeting would take place in France in September 2014 to coincide with the School’s 50th anniversary, due to unforeseen circumstances this was not possible and took place a month later in October. During the meeting the Partners discussed the expected results, planned future meetings and distributed tasks.
Each of the partner countries hosted a transnational meeting. During the second transnational meeting, held in the UK, it was agreed that each partner would have a theme for their contribution to the eLearning course: UK and Finland – Occupational Health & Safety; France – Environmental Safety; Italy – Wellbeing.
There were two main objectives in the project: Firstly, produce an eLearning course on Health & Safety; Secondly, adhering to Agenda 21 objectives of ‘Promote health education in schools, information exchange, technical support and training’ as stated in the UN Environment Program environment for development.
The overall aim is to produce future high quality ECVET mobilities supported by this new preparation material as well as the motivation of employers to receive foreign students for placements by improving their level of understanding on Health & Safety Issues and in the process lowering the barriers to them finding working in other EU countries. Each student received Europass Mobility documents stating the knowledge, skills and competences they have acquired.
The aim of the project was to develop various activities involving as many students and staff as possible. We intended to involve local employers and/or structures as silent partners in order to provide a practical view point.
The activities as set out in the application were to hold a Health & Safety induction within the college, hold a further Health & Safety induction within industry, complete a first aid course, take part in a fire safety seminar, and a machinery safety awareness course. The students took part in two inductions within the college, one presented by the college staff and one presented by the Construction Industry Training Board (‘CITB’). The students also had the opportunity to attend a local housing development where they were given a further Health & Safety induction and were presented with a formal construction site induction card by the site manager. Within the college surroundings the students took part in a first aid course which was delivered by a college first aider. As part of the college induction the students were briefed on machinery safety.
The partners produced an eLearning course, took part in peer-to-peer teaching and safety inductions both with employers and in the colleges.
Partner 1 organised a multiplier event in Spain (PIC 949444537) to coincide with an event the Spanish organisation were holding for local carpentry teachers. It was agreed by the French National Agency that the event could be held outside of the country.
As part of the exchanges the hosts held health & wellbeing days which took the students away from learning to experience the local culture.
The final meeting took place in Finland at which the final results were presented and the information disseminated regarding the project, its impact and the benefits. Overall it was felt that the project was successful and could continue to evolve in the future with further input.
Due to the UK’s recent decision to leave the European Union it is not yet known if the free movement of workers will remain in place and how European workers will be affected in the future.
