Project Summary

Increased heterogeneity, the multiplicity of risks of digital media and progressive right-wing populism pose new challenges for teachers and pupils alike – in school as well as in their private lives. As a school, we see it as our duty to defend democratic values and freedoms, as these are the basic prerequisites for a peaceful coexistence of society and, in a figurative sense, for the microcosm of schools. We agree that peaceful co-existence contributes significantly to the development of a positive school climate, in which pupils and teachers can work productively and, above all, live “healthily”. Therefore, our project HEALTH @ school is attempting to tackle current challenges such as depreciation of values and cyberbullying as part of a two-year collaboration between European schools (Bari, Italy / St. Pierre, La Réunion France / Gran, Norway and Windsbach, Germany). At the same time, we want to identify factors that strengthen the idea of a heathy school.
Our central objective of this collaboration is thus to increase the overall well-being of all members of each school.

As further objectives we define
– prevention and intervention of bullying at school
– preventing stress for students and teachers by creating a positive school and classroom environment
– communication of values, especially with regard to dealing with heterogeneity and democracy building
– Increasing physical health and, as a result, the performance of our students

The field of action of our project should also be extended to the digital world of the students. Thus, the list of the above goals of HEALTH @ school is complemented by
– Prevention of cyberbullying
– Guidance on responsible action in social networks
– Teaching values in the digital age

About 90 students (14-18 years) and 25 teachers will actively contribute to the project´s work, but it is a big concern for us to involve as many members of the school families as possible in our results and products. We plan five project trips, different work phases between the mobilities and a number of additional virtual meetings in TwinSpace. As part of various activities, we will, among other things, work on the design of up-to-date teaching materials, which will be usable across disciplines and schools. In the project areas “mental health” and “physical health” we will deepen the competences of all participants in the areas of bullying and violence prevention as well as nutrition and sport and get to know methods for coping with stress. In our last meeting we will transfer the findings from these areas into the digital world of the students. We call this area “digital health”. The publication of the products of our project in TwinSpace ensures a long-term use of our project results by European schools and thus underlines the relevance of HEALTH @ school.

Concrete results of our project should be easy-to-implement, English lessons on bullying and value teaching, which can then be applied by all partner schools (and other interested educational institutions) and embedded in a holistic “healthy school” concept. In addition, a meaningful supervision concept for teachers will be developed, which should help to relieve and reduce the stress on the college.
