Project Summary
The aim of our project is to implement healthy eating habits and active way of spending time among our studens, their parents and the local community. Healthy lifestyle is still an unfamiliar topic for mentally disabled students and their families all over Europe. The statistics show that our special education needs schools have problems with obesity, lack of interest in taking part in P.E. lessons and healthy eating habits. Some of our students smoke. The project deals with implementation of healthy eating habits and creating an opportunity to get to know different indoor and outdoor sports disciplines (athletics, bowling, swimming, tennis and climbing) and their influence on students’ performance. Proving that mental disability and economical stituation cannot be barriers to be included in the European society and develop students’ passions.
The project “Healthy Europeans on the move” is created by 4 institutions. Four of them are special education needs schools from Poland, Turkey, Latvia and Spain. The project provides teachers’ training and enriching teachers knowledge by getting to know new methods (teaching sports and healthy eating habits) and approaches (psychological and pedagogical) used to work with mentally disabled students. The methodology of small steps and individualized approach are the inevitable methods while teaching mentally disabled students.
The goals of the projects are:
– social inclusion of mentally disabled students,
– changing their bad eating habits,
– improving knowledge about healthy lifestyle and the role of diet,
– rising parents’ awareness on the problem of obesity,
– improving sports skills and knowledge about sports disciplines,
– improving ICT and language skills,
– improving cooking skills,
– practising basic competences in the everyday life situations,
– getting knowledge about European countries and their culture,
– making new friends,
– building motivation to learn and self-esteem,
– strenghtening the role of teacher,
– implementing new methods and approaches by teachers,
– observing special educational needs systems in European countries.
The results of the project will be:
– the project website (all presentations, instructional films, photos, lessons scripts, recipes, decscription of mobilities),
– educational health program,
– the Europass Mobility certificate,
– the swimming certificate,
– the t-shirt created by all of participants,
– festivities in partners’ countries,
– new methods and approaches practised in the classroom.
Due to the project, all of the institutions will have a chance to buy special equipment, such as sports equipment, cooking appliances, ICT devices and specialized literature both for teachers and students. All of the teachers will have an opportunity to observe and learn new methods and strategies used in different counties in Europe and use this knowledge in their schools. It will definitely enrich the teachers’ classes.
To sum up, the international cooperation of special education needs schools is a great way to gain new experience and share knowledge among partners from different parts of Europe. The interfusion of experience and fresh ideas guarantee success in the field of education. We believe that thanks to this project all of our teachers and mentally disabled students will gain motivation to constantly develop and improve themselves.
The sustainability of the project will be measured by our project website and the educational health program which will be implemented in our institutions and eTwinning modules.
