Project Summary

The topic of the use of consumer neuroscience and smart research solutions in aromachology within this project brought together new knowledge, information and a network of partner organizations located in the EU. It enabled research opportunities based on national preferences, as well as impact assessment of particular methodologies and comparisons between partners, including transfer of new knowledge and innovative solutions. A secondary benefit was the active cooperation and discussion platform between the partners. Aromatic compounds are used by many companies, but scientific evidence about the development of aromas and the analysis of their use in practice was neither proven by testing in real conditions, nor specified for various areas. This was addressed by the set goal and planned procedures of the project, which enabled the mutual sharing of this knowledge within the partnership, as well as for external subjects. The aim of the project was to summarize the available knowledge within the topic, which were subsequently used in the creation of a reference database, in which, in order to identify preferential differences in participating countries, in addition to traditional forms of data collection also consumer neuroscience tools were used. This newly acquired and summarized knowledge was used in the design and development of a smart aromatisation unit, which is currently the subject of intellectual property protection. Last but not least, the project contributed to the creation of complex publication outputs (monographs, scientific articles and case studies), which summarize the acquired knowledge. The project brought together 8 partners: 6 European universities and 2 companies that are leaders in the production and sale of aromas for public spaces, which had a significant contribution to the project’s goals. The project actively contributed to innovations in the field of smart technologies and services, and at the same time, it extended existing studies that use neuroimaging and biometric methods by taking into account air quality in a given environment and the related changes in preferences (e.g. due to weather) as well as data gained in real conditions. The implemented project on the use of consumer neuroscience in aromachology is unique in the conditions of the Slovak Republic. The creation of a smart aromatisation unit and a reference database of aroma preferences has a significant benefit for the business sphere in the field of production, trade and services and, last but not least, for the general and scientific public. The project activities were significantly influenced by the situation in connection with the spreading COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the above, it can be stated that the set goals were met within all 4 intellectual outputs. The main added value of the project is the innovation and sustainability of processes and results. The project outputs contributed to the improvement of relations within the domestic and international exchange of views and experiences with partners from foreign scientific institutions and at the same time represent considerable real potential for usability of obtained results and transfer of knowledge and technologies in selected sectors, but especially in the field of education and training at home and abroad.
