Project Summary
In the Flow is a two year long cross-curricular project that grew out of identified need for further development of science, maths and language skills as well as active citizenship. Five organizations from 5 different countries are taking part – Slovenia, Turkey, Poland, Greece and Estonia. There is a common trait to all of us. In the recent years we have observed that the number of students enrolling in selectable science subjects has fallen and that students have very little motivation for learning science in general. Considering that the areas where we come from have substantial potential and there are various enterprises that will require qualified workforces in the future, we believe it is important for us to offer our students some more compelling ways to study science. However, we are aware that just good knowledge of a subject without the need for sustainable development is not enough for future employees. That is why active citizenship is one of the important components of out project. We will strive for not only knowledge but also informed decision-making for the benefit of all. We all also often notice that our pupils are good at remembering great amounts of information, but they lack the skills to use the knowledge in real-life situations. In this project we would like to activate our students to become more involved in the process of learning and to get first-hand experience about how the knowledge they gain at school can be used in real life. Our focus will be on developing science and maths skills and at the same time acquire foreign language skills.
The project brings together teachers and students from five different European countries in learning to think globally and work on activities that contribute to the community’s well-being. In accordance with the individual experience and expertise of the partner institutions the focus of the project is set on the following key competences for students aged 10 -18: science and mathematical competence, communication in foreign language and active citizenship.
Our activities will be focused on:
– developing and acquiring learner-centered teaching methods such as CLIL, project based learning and others. Teachers will develop these through self-study as well as through joint events during which external experts will be involved to facilitate their learning and acquisition,
– through new teaching methods and approaches students will be more active participants in their learning.
The activities in the project will be divided into those that will take part at each organization and those that will involve international collaboration. Among such activities are project-based learning tasks that will involve pupils from different countries working together on the eTwinning platform. The results of their work will be presented at mobilities. All the activities will be designed in the way that their content will be included in students’ assessment.
Our goal is to equip students with skills and attitudes that are necessary for overcoming challenges rather than just providing them with information. To be able to do this, we would like our teachers to network on the international level and tackle the issue of teaching methods and styles. Together we strive to learn from each other new approaches to teaching, where this activity will surpass mere stating of the facts and learners learning by heart and reproducing. We would like to find ways to bring science to the classroom in the way that it is a reflection of real-life situations and that its function is to help solve real-life problems. We believe that networking among teachers from different subject fields and thus producing cross-curricular teaching is essential since it prepares students for the complexity of the real world. Also, we would like to engage all students according to their abilities, giving those who are able to do more, more complex tasks so that they can develop higher order cognitive strategies, thus encouraging active participation. In the process we aspire to instill in them values and skills that promote lifelong learning.
During the course of the project students will realize that to be an active active citizen it means people to possess knowledge and ethic and to be eager to utilize them to improve communities.
