Project Summary

INA – The international use of analysis sheets for educational quality and observation orders to improve the quality of teaching

INA has the goal of reviewing and developing a set of instruments for the evaluation of the quality of teaching, that has been developed at the LMU Munich and that has so far been used in Bavaria and Germany. The objective of INA is to evaluate its suitability for international use, adjust it where necessary, and further enhance it by various aspects (e.g. intercultural learning, inclusion, digitalization, speech-sensitive learning processes). In consists of approx. 230 reflection sheets for on the quality of teaching with a focus on the individual teacher’s practice from the areas of general didactic, subject-specific didactics and special-needs education and 530 observation orders for teacher supervision. Each reflection operationalizes and outlines in everyday language a particular aspect of teaching quality related to teacher’s actions in class that has been described in the relevant literature. The aim of the reflection sheets is to structure reflection discussions about teaching quality in such a way that the individual aspects operationalized in the questionnaires are perceived more consciously by the participating teachers during the course of the conversation and are thus effective for planning, implementation and analysis of future lessons. Ultimately, it is about the reception and realization of theoretical knowledge about teaching quality in the multi-level school system or – to put it more briefly – about concrete impulses for the development of teaching quality and the establishment of transnational, European standards for teaching quality.

Drawing into consideration the realities and traditions of different school systems, the applicability, terminology and effects of reflection sheets and observation orders will be analysed. University staff from LMU Munich and PH Linz will monitor the testing, evaluate and validation process and will discuss and validate the results on a basis of a pre-defined set of criteria. Teachers of at the participating schools (Austria, Germany, Finland, Romania and Spain ) will test their applicability through a process of collegial supervision. In five project conferences, the school-internal observations are evaluated. The reflection sheets will be further developed and newly developed internationally, in mixed-country working groups and tested for their practicability at the host school. So far, no comparative data are available on the use of these reflection sheets in an international context.

The aim of this transnational project is to develop and present international quality standards for teaching. The project partners are: the Eurocampus, Palma de Mallorca, the primary school “Berg-am-Laim” Munich, lyceum Nikolaus-Lenau Timisoara, the German School Helsinki, PraxismittelschuleLinz, Pädagogische Hochschule der Diözese Linz. The project is coordinated by the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich.
