Project Summary
The Interdisciplinar STEAM Lessons at School (ISLES) is formed by the association of four secondary schools from different countries (Spain, France, Ireland and Italy) with extensive experience participating in national and European STEM initiatives. The teaching staff of these centers, seeing the need to improve the recent results in standardized tests and aligned with the 2020 Objective for the EU of lowering 15% the proportion of 15-year-old students who do not reach level 2 in Reading, Mathematics and Sciences, want to equip themselves with innovative pedagogical approaches, in particular incorporating the arts to the didactics of science, increasing the interest of students towards STEM subjects and awakening scientific vocations. This is the first collaboration between the four partners and complements initiatives addressed individually: Erasmus + STEM projects (DICES, CSS, MATH3.0) and European projects (Science on Stage, Europeana, Scientix, eTwinning).
Following the recommendations of the recent Report on the attractiveness of STEM subjects [https://bit.ly/2MYi50L], the partners want to join forces and share good practices, providing our teachers with new pedagogies that will allow the student learning to be contextualized, motivating students by incorporating the arts into our educational practice. The ISLES project will allow, taking advantage of the synergies between the partners, to support us in the transformation of our STEM teaching staff into STE(A)M, something that would require resources that we do not have separately. We also want the students, in line with the Paris Declaration, to value European cultural heritage and cultural diversity, therefore this project proposes short-term mobilities where activities related to STE(A)M and cultural exchange are carried out, encouraging the immersion in the other culture and language, thus generating a feeling of European citizenship. Finally, the partners see ISLES as a first opportunity to move forward together in increasing the European dimension of our educational communities, becoming a foundation for future collaborations.
This project is based on the following priorities:
P1 – Increase levels of achievement and interest in STEMs, promoting the STE(A)M approach to education through interdisciplinary classes
P2 – Strengthen the profiles of teaching professions, facilitating teachers continuous professional development and mobility, supporting the development of innovative methods.
P3 – Social and educational value of European cultural heritage
The associated centers want to achieve the following objectives linked to priorities:
O1: Increase the student interest in STEM subjects through their participation in the project activities [Related to Priority 1: P1]
O2: Strengthen the profile of the participating teachers, supporting their continuous professional development, facilitating their mobility, in order to share and develop innovative educational practices on STE(A)M [P2]
O3: Increase the European Dimension of our educational communities highlighting the importance of European Cultural Heritage as a mean to promote tolerance and non-discrimination among our students through the realization of the collaborative activities of the project and the intense intercultural dialogue produced by the short duration exchanges that highlight European heritage. Generate a network of schools that allow further development of future common KA229 projects. [P3]
O4: Acquire eTwinning European quality seals by meeting the criteria of the new Spanish eTwinning SNA rubric for the National Quality Seal in order to certify each partner with the ETWINNING SCHOOL seal in 2022. Obtaining the STEM School Label (https: / /www.stemschoollabel.eu/) for each school. [P1, P2, P3]
The main tangible results of the project will be:
1 SEALS – The partners will aplly for the STEM School Label and national and European eTwinning quality seals that allow each school to be credited as eTwinning School in 2022. They will be a guarantee for the quality of the project and will also contribute to the dissemination of activities and they will make the products visible.
2 ONLINE SEMINAR ETWINNING – In May 2022 an Online Seminar will be organized in eTwinning by the STEM eTwinning Featured Group and the coordinators to disseminate the activities and products of the project, the recording will be available in the STEM Feature Group adding to the sustainability of the project results.
3 ISLES Guides – Each center develops one and puts it into practice in its mobility. They will be good STE (A) M practices, public on the TwinSpace and widely disseminated. They will be indexed in repositories such as Scientix and the Project Resources Plattform.
