Project Summary
The project will be targetted towards educators, youth workers, and youth leaders to support their learning, development and competencies in cultural heritage. It will also contribute to achieving various Sustainable Development Goals and to the European Framework for Action on Cultural Heritage (EFACH) Goals, strengthen pan-European SDG and cultural heritage cooperation with the development of knowledge, skills and activism.
The project will be delivered through a comprehensive programme of study visits, non-formal workshops, activities, mapping, sharing of good practice, explorations, research, development of learning materials, piloting and testing of the digital media and a robust evaluation process. The outputs will be a toolkit, digital map and mobile application on ancient cultural heritage preservation and promotion of diasporic communities in the UK, Netherlands, Romania, Slovenia and Turkey.
The project objectives are to:
-contribute to the creation of a sustainable society by exploring a diversity of cultural heritage spaces, spaces and stories all of which need to be preserved, to be used more widely and to be developed and sustained for future;
-to enable educators, young workers and youth leaders to understand and take some responsibility for sharing knowledge on cultural heritage;
-to support the development of an inclusive society with cultural heritage as a shared source of knowledge, education, and experiences;
-to develop the capacity of educators, youth workers and youth leaders through their engagement in innovative non-formal learning opportunities e.g dialogue processes, audio visual digital aids, and development of other online resources.
– develop, produce and test a toolkit that will be circulated to a wide European and global audience
– develop a digital map highlighting spaces, places and stories of cultural importance in the 5 cities
– develop a mobile application with the information from the digital map as an interactive resource
– conduct a series of local dissemination events including a final multiplier event in Turkey
– carry out a robust Evaluation process
The outputs are a toolkit, online digital map and mobile application which can be used as a resource for improving economic, environmental and social participation, and for greater understanding and appreciation of heritage places, spaces and stories. *A digital map and mobile application being developed will be an interactive way of capturing and showcasing the cultural heritage including that of non-European diaspora in participating countries (African-Caribbean, Roma, Javo-Indonesian cultural heritage in the UK, Afro-Surinamese, Roma, Java-Indonesian cultural heritage in the Netherlands, Java-Indonesian cultural heritage in Slovenia and Roma and African culture in Romania. It will contribute to integration, community participation and the strengthened of local engagement ( the more we know about the past, the more we can contribute to sustainable development) and It will help to create social cohesion by its ability to transform the value of historical sites into socially and ecologically sustainable tourism. Caring for and managing antiquities, places, spaces and stories leads to an increase in the general attractiveness of a region, which by extension pays off economically through more visitors and while this is not the intention of this project, it provides the base for that type of work to be developed.
The participants will be:
*educators, youth leader and workers who work with disadvantaged people in their communities, so the local impact of this project will be significant. The participants will use snowballing approach to cascade downwards and across the information that they learn from the study visits.
An estimate of some (300) three hundred educators, youth workers and leaders, stakeholders, supporters and several thousands of other people will be impacted directly especially from the local multiplier events and the main multiplier event in Turkey, and also because the 2021 European Capital of Culture is Romania.
*key staff and the participants ie educators, youth leaders and youth workers in the 5 countries will acquire competencies in informal educational processes including Sanfoka, Ubuntu, WorldCafe, Appreciative Enquiry, and U Process
*youth workers, educators and youth leaders will have developed skills and experiences in the exploration and better understanding of European and Non-European Cultural Heritage within Europe eg African/Caribbean/Roma/Java-Indonesian
*Participants and anyone who engages with the intellectual outputs will have an increased understanding of the changing nature of culture and that will add to the promotion of European integration
*Participants will have acquired new skills e.g Recording (using digital media and other creative expressions) the places, spaces, concepts and stories of the countries.
