Project Summary
Project ” Keep IT, stay FIT! ICT & Helathy life style in our schools. ” was implemented from September 1, 2016 to August 31, 2018 by four European secondary general schools: BURDUR Goller Yoresi Anadolu Lisesi (Turkey), Abtei-Gymnasium Brauweiler (Germany), Panevezio Juozo Balcikonio gimnazija (Lithuania) and Private Junior High School No. 2 “School of Dreams” (Poland).
The project’s goal was to broaden the knowledge and skills of partners (students and teachers) in the field of information and communication technologies related to both the education of students and the dissemination of desirable habits of using communication devices by young people. At the same time, we worked on shaping pro-health attitudes of young people (proper eating habits, outdoor movement). We also wanted pupils to learn the everyday life of their colleagues and their families in partner countries, culture and nature and monuments of these countries. Thanks to this, the youth was to expand not only their horizons, but also strengthen the attitudes of openness to others and tolerance towards them. An indirect goal was to improve the English language (working language of the project) through direct and indirect (using various types of devices and communication channels) to communicate with partners.
As part of the project, students and teachers took part in 4 meetings (short-term youth exchanges, one in each partner country), and teachers – in two meetings devoted to project management. During their work, project tasks were worked on. They consisted of both trainings (usually on the basis of exchange of experience, when teachers from a given school conducted workshops for guests, there were also workshops conducted by non-teacher specialists – these were mainly lectures and workshops on healthy nutrition). Then, we used this knowledge in specific practical activities. They concerned: time-lapse animation, geocaching (open-air games using smartphones), robotics (Lego Mindstorms Robots), film production, the use of smartphone applications to interpret labels and bar codes on food products, joint preparation of healthy meals related to with the national cuisine of our countries. Between meetings, the students under the supervision of teachers implemented such activities as: preparing a presentation in the Prezi program (which they then presented during meetings), preparing a calendar with recipes for healthy and tasty dishes or preparing a script for lip-dub, which was then recorded during a project meeting . ICT-related activities were usually carried out using open online resources.
Basically, the goals described above have been achieved. Students and teachers have acquired new skills and knowledge in the field of ICT, healthy lifestyle (including nutrition). Young people during short-term exchanges were accommodated with the families of their partners, thanks to which she had the opportunity to get to know the everyday life of her foreign colleagues and their relatives. Often, students made friends with their “hosts”, maintained contact through telecommunications devices, and even visited each other privately. Young people naturally had to speak English, thanks to which they improved their knowledge of this language. During each visit, sightseeing tours took place (including as part of the project geocaching), thanks to which there was an opportunity to get to know the regions in which we were staying.
In the material sense, m. the following project results: calendar with recipes for healthy dishes, taking into account our national cuisines; lib dub; project website; geocaching scenarios; films, including time-lapse; guides on: geocaching, time-lapse movie, applications for the interpretation of bar codes and labels, proper use of smartphones, presentations in the Prezi program, etc.
We believe that after the end of the project its impact will be permanent, thanks to the new skills acquired by students and teachers, which will translate into, among others, on the quality of education in our schools. (A certain problem with regard to the sustainability of the project’s impact will be that in 2019 the Polish school will cease to exist in connection with the reform of the education system, however, a significant part of the teachers involved in our project will continue their work in a primary school that operates in the same building what a blanked middle school.). Graduates of our facilities will leave their walls equipped with competences that are not provided for in school curricula.
