Project Summary
TThe KA219 project “Yesterday’s fiction is the world of tomorrow – The universe Jules Verne” was born from the partnership between two schools: CPR Plurilingüe Losada from Vigo, Spain and the Lycée Nicolas Appert, from Orvault-Nantes, France.
The project arises around the figure of Jules Verne and the arrival of Captain Nemo to Vigo’s Bay aboard the Nautilus, in search of the treasures sunk in the Battle of Rande. Through this project, we want to rebuild Jules Verne’s world from both sides: Nantes, the town where the author was born and lived, and the city of Vigo, which welcomed on two occasions the visit of the visionary writer. The aim pursued was to study his literary, historical and scientific-technological world from different perspectives and disciplines and gather the spirit of an era of innovation and scientific advances that anticipated the future.
31 students from 3rd ESO of the Spanish Secondary school and 31 students from Seconde of the French high school have participated, as well as a total of 18 teachers from both schools belonging to the areas of: Geography, History, Foreign Languages, Literature, Biology and Natural Sciences, Industrial engineering, Technology, Computer science, Art, Physics, Chemistry and Physical education. In addition, there is the collaboration of researchers, historians, journalists, writers and scientists.
For ten months, various activities have been developed around the author and his work and the world of scientific and technological innovation. It has been conceived as a cooperative and multidisciplinary project in Spanish, French and English which developed appealing didactic tools, both to young people and the general public. Among these, we must highlight two activities that combine leisure and tourism with technology, didactic content, sport and environment.
The first is the creation of a multi-geocaching activity on the Vernian Route in Vigo, in the urban area and an earthcache on San Simon Island. The second is the creation of an Android application for mobile phones and tablets “Discover Jules Verne in Nantes” based on emblematic places of the city of Nantes in relation to the author’s biography.
Other results have been produced, such as the elaboration of an atlas of one of Verne’s novels “Robur the Conqueror” as a collaboration with the Jules Verne Hispanic Society, a digital Trivia quiz, a webpage, audio visuals, a documentary web and a radio programme: “Is Jules Verne still alive in Nantes and in Vigo?”.
This project has had a major impact at all levels. In the school communities involved it meant greater internationalization of the schools, the improvement of language and the 21st century skills for students and teachers, the modernization of pedagogical methodology, the promotion of innovation and the use of technology to produce new digital didactic tools.
The project is related to the celebration in Vigo – February 2018 – of the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Nautilus to the Bay of Vigo. This festival has had a major local and regional impact all the year long. Somehow, this project has contributed to the understanding of the Vernian world from different points of view: personal, literary, scientific and technological. The mobility of French students to Vigo and Spanish students to Nantes has caused that literary societies, scientific and technological institutions and municipalities knew and collaborated with the project.
