Project Summary

Hurbanova kindergarten (Bytča) in 2014 – 2016 was involved in the Handmade Tradition project as a partner country of the Czech Republic and Poland. The project name Let’s revive folk customs and traditions together to the previous project. The main coordinator will be Hurbanova kindergarten in the Slovak Republic, with partners schools in the Czech Republic and Poland.

Folk customs and traditions are the main units toward the more systematic artistic education of preschool children. For kids, folk creativity has extensive educational and artistic value. Folk creativity displays a world full of observation, wit and resourcefulness. Children used to participate in all areas of life. Many rhymes and folk songs were associated with animals and nature. Children experienced everything at home, in the village, and in the countryside – changing seasons, housework, or key events in life.

Friendship and communication between the previous project countries continues. The aim of ” Let’s revive folk customs and traditions together” is to spread cultural heritage, folk traditions, and explore national history. Through this project we will gain new knowledge about folk traditions in those regions, collect tales, folk songs, children’s games, proverbs, sayings, etc. As folk traditions are fading, we aim to stimulate kids’ interest in folk songs and dance to contribute to their emotional development.
They will explore waning cultural heritage through the songs, customs and dialect of their home region. Through this experience children will know how to immerse themselves in crafts, before such skills are lost. So pre-primary education will equip children with knowledge of folk traditions – which will become an important motivator towards children’s self-realization.
We are confident that our publications can be successfully used to create a quality educational product for any education system. We aim to prepare six five-day teacher meetings to search, explore, and compare folk customs and traditions, and investigate castles and mansions in Slovakia, Czech Republic and Poland – and record such findings in book format. During the meetings, participants will learn folk songs, games, proverbs and sayings. In children’s songs and games, we will seek crossovers between partner countries. After each international meeting, a workshop in kindergartens will link teachers, children, and parents. Kindergartens from all three countries will present project-related info boards with the public continually informed via kindergarten websites – where the main coordinator will also publish all recorded activities (which will be used for book publications). The long-term benefits of the project will be its use for future generations.

“Tradition seeks not to merely preserve ashes, but also to pass on the flame.”
