Project Summary
Our point to create this Project has been to help the students to improve their consumption behaviors in a holitstic way. We chose this topic because it is a serious problem among teenagers. We have identified the motto “LET’S STOP CONSUMPTION FRENZY”. According the report of United Nations Environment Programme, unsustainable consumption is a common problem of the human kind in the World, so the project focuses on developing conscious individuals. Excessive consumption is a global issue and its consequences affect the whole. That is why we carried out this project transnationally.
Our project’s prior OBJECTIVES have been to prevent students from unsustainable consumption, to teach and disseminate the importance of true consumption behaviors between teenagers and to give our youths the awareness about CONSUMPTION FRENZY sharing the results of learning activities, visiting Environmental Parks and recycling factories.
Our secondary objective has been to make our youths feel how production can become wise. We have used “learning by doing /learning by experiencing” technique during our Project, e.g. we did workshops using recycling materials.
We also increased competence in foreign languages and level of digital competence, to develop knowledge among students and teachers of the diversity of European cultures and languages and its value, to improve pupil`s intellectual and social skills, team working skills, communication skills, inter-cultural dialogue and to increase sense of responsible individual approach. The students including the ones with fewer opportunities have been our main target group and they have bene in the center of all stages.Priorities has been given to improve the attainment of young people especially those at the risk of early school leaving and with low basic skills.
The project has been created by the negotiation and agreement of all partners. In the wise and eco-friendly project, we planned to do partnership with 5 countries. We have determined the number of participants as 4 students and 3 teachers from each partner country. The partners from Spain, Greece, Lithuania, Romania and Turkey are chosen among several schools from different countries all over Europe. We previously worked on different projects with our partners. We are all experts in our professions.
We had different activities in preparation, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, dissemination and sustainability stages. We have prepared a calendar that has reached a wide audience. There were two important dates in our project that we plan to celebrate. One of these was ‘BUY NOTHING DAY’ on 25-28th of November in 2019-20. The other was “THE WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY” on 5th of June in 2019-20. We prepared two booklets in our project. One of them was our coloring booklet for students in kindergarten; the other was our guide booklet for middle school students. The purpose of these booklets was to increase the awareness of the individuals of all age groups. In our activity of frugality room, our youths used their creativity to make unused products more usable.
Thus, our youths’ self-confidence and creativity, intellectual and social skills increased. In our hobby garden activity, our youths were aimed to protect nature, to carry out sustainable activities and leave a habitable society for future generations. We organized debates, panels, open sessions and symposiums on a different topic in each mobility (Consumers’ Rights; Consumers’ behaviour during COVID-time; Recycling of plastics, glass and paper, etc). We reached more people by performing these activities in our local schools.
Regarding the methodology that was used in this project, we relied mainly on the practical approach in the implementation of the project tasks. The activities were learner-centered, constructivist, interactive and in line with the modern concept of the teaching the whole child approach, thus relating to the critical thinking and creativity of the students. The intense use of ICT in every stage and aspect of the project was both appealing to students and beneficial for the overall quality of the project and its results.
We had both concrete and abstract results at the end of the Project. The main EXPECTED result of our project was the individuals who have responsibility about holistic consumption and conscious attitudes to their environment in every kind of subject. This Project helped students to achieve their skills to overcome irresponsible consumption, to promote success, self-confidence, self-esteem, participatory spirit, social acceptance and over all basic skills.
Our students have developed an understanding of European Geography; they also evaluated other countries’ views and opinions about the conscious consumer. The Project has helped to pupils in many ways such as: prevent social exclusion, prevention of early school leaving, developing foreign language learning, national and international consciousness.
