Project Summary
The United Nations adopted the Security Council Resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace and Security with the aim to strengthen the role of young people in peacebuilding. The Resolution urges states and other relevant actors amongst others to put in place “measures to empower youth in peacebuilding and conflict resolution” and “to support quality education for peace that equips youth with the ability to engage constructively in civic structures and inclusive political processes”. Unfortunately, according to the UNSCR 2250 Progress Study in March 2018 youth are still far from fully participating in the conflict-related issues that are affecting them.
Accordingly, the consortium takes on the call of the UNSCR2250 to improve quality education for peace, and therefore has conducted a needs assessment among youth stakeholders working by means of education in the field of youth empowerment and peace work.
Thus, building on the UNSCR 2250, the needs assessment and the consortium needs, the project aims at empowering youth to become active stakeholders for local community development and youth-led peacebuilding initiatives.
The project objectives are:
– To create educational resources for peace education programmes on competence development of young people in youth-led peace work
– To establish an international community of practice for shared learning and support on peace education as an instrument for local youth-led community development
– To foster the recognition of non-formal peace education as a tool for youth empowerment in the youth sector
With these objectives, the project aims to foster quality in youth work through addressing capacity development of CSOs working in the youth field, youth workers and youth educators as its primary target group, while it targets young people as the final beneficiaries whose competences in peacebuilding shall be enhanced in view to youth empowerment.
The project’s target group are CSOs working in the youth field, youth workers and youth educators. Beneficiaries of the project are young people benefiting from educational activities based on the OER, training programmes, the online educational platform and the improved work of key-actors in the field of youth.
The project activities include an intensive research period in which a team of experts will review existing competence frameworks for youth-led peace work. The research, in combination with other measures, will result in the publication of an OER including:
– A review of the “Designing Learning for Peace” competence framework and a general approach to youth-led peace work
– A comprehensive educational programme for blended residential training activities on youth-led peace work, including e-courses and audiovisual materials
The training programme and the rest of materials will be made available through an online educational platform which will include a community of practice and a certification mechanism supported by a consortium of youth stakeholders.
An international dissemination campaign is also in place. The actions planned include the realization of an international online seminar based on the programme developed.
By implementing all these activities, the project will generate an Online Open Educational Resource, including a training programme and an e-learning platform on community development and youth-led peace initiatives through non-formal peace education for youth workers, youth educators and CSOs. As a result of the project, an active community of practice will be sharing, producing and innovating on the approaches for youth-led community development, youth-led peace initiatives and non-formal peace education.
Also a certification mechanism on community development for youth-led peace work will be established and promoted among relevant stakeholders at national and international level.
