Project Summary

The main task of the project is to find, observe and summarize differences in teaching and performing nursing procedures and in a care for patients. Four nursing schools from four European countries will participate [The Czech Republic, Finland, Macedonia, Spain]. On the basis of our experience with nursing abroad we are aware of the fact that there are considerable differences in these areas. We would like to gather all differences and summarize them in a publication that will be used in teaching of medical subjects at the nursing schools involved in the project. We will focus on application of injections [intramuscular, subcutaneous, intravenous, insulin], infusions [including the way how is the procedure recorded], transfusion [including competence for the procedure, tests of compatibility before application], insertion of nasogastric tube [including comparison of tests proving correctness of insertion], enema, catheterization, the way of disinfection and sterilization, hygiene in hospital, availability of aids, the way of making beds etc. Moreover we will compare diets in hospitals and composition of meals for patients, price of meal for a patient/day, requirements for student nurses in appearance [hairdressing, jewellery, dress code], use of herbs, lifestyle of students. This will be done by short visits of teachers in the nursing schools involved in the project in the first year and by five-day long visits of students in the second year. Through this project we would also like to establish relations with our partners and enable students and teachers from all partners’ schools to share their knowledge and experience from the area of health care. Teachers will not only visit nursing lessons and observe practical demonstrations of nursing procedures , but also attend a hospital training in a teaching hospital. They will discuss, apart from nursing teaching methodology and differences in performing procedures, how to tackle early school leaving and try to find the way how to enable success for students with a migrant background, Roma population etc.
The students from all partners’ schools will visit nursing schools in the second year of the project. There will be four meetings at four involved schools. Each time five students from every country will participate. They will observe demonstrations of nursing procedures at the host school and have a hospital training together with students from the host school. Furthermore, they will have a presentation on a topic assigned before traveling abroad. They will work on the basis of worksheets prepared by their teachers from the first year of the project.
Altogether from each partner school three teachers in the first year and fifteen students [age 16-20] in the second year plus an accompanying teacher will attend meetings abroad. More students from a host country will participate when the meeting is held in the home country.
Participation in the project will improve the amounts of professional knowledge of both teachers and students. Teachers will use new findings in their lessons and students can apply them in hospitals once they work as nurses. It is beneficial to know how things are going on in hospitals in foreign countries because we have more and more foreigners in our home countries and nurses should be well prepared. At the same time as a result of the lack of nurses across Europe more and more foreign nurses work in our home countries and should have at least basic knowledge about differences in a care. Thanks to sharing experience with students and teachers who will not directly participate in the project, it is going to be beneficial for a vast group of people. Apart from professional positives all participants will improve communicative abilities in English language and computer skills.

All findings will be summarized in a publication and presented on conferences for public and medical staff. We intend to continue searching for differences in more areas of nursing and with more foreign nursing schools even after the project. In future we would like to summarize the differences in nursing procedures in most European countries. We believe that this project may arouse attractiveness of studying nursing which is extremely important due to the lack of nurses in Europe.
