Project Summary
Germans emigrated to the region around today’s Sibiu in Romania as early as the 12th century. After war, displacement and flight (most recently after the fall of the iron curtain), the proportion of Transylvanian Saxons in the Romanian population is only 0.4 percent. It is all the more gratifying that the two Romanian partner schools involved in the project maintain departments in which students with German roots are taught in German. The tradition of the Transylvanian Saxons is lived in these schools in a variety of ways. On the other hand, the GS St. Johann and the GS Bernbeuren place great emphasis on conveying customs and traditions in order to contribute to the preservation of our cultural heritage.
When we got to know each other at the school in Sibiu, we came to the conclusion that we can learn from each other through mutual visits and started the project “Oberbayern meets Siebenbürgen”. After all, the issues of war, displacement and the resulting flight are highly topical today; with extremely serious consequences. The main goal of our project is therefore to give peace and international understanding a space again. Getting to know each other’s local tradition and the lively customs of the participating countries should lead our children into conversation, should show you similarities and differences in the respective cultural heritage, should help our children to recognize how wonderfully diverse and colorful our world actually is.
Getting to know the historical roots, customs and traditions of your own country but also of the partner country, the recurring communication with the partners to create intercultural and interpersonal skills as well as the use of modern (communication) media are the concrete goals of our project.
First of all, all eight teachers involved meet once in Romania and Germany to get background knowledge about the customs and traditions of the partner country. After carrying out a teaching sequence on the tradition of your own country at the main school, there is a mutual visit and the teaching sequences “Our historical roots” and “Our diverse customs” are carried out by the respective guest teachers (official language is always German) at the partner schools. Project days with performances about one’s own and foreign customs as well as a live video transmission of the performances (with the possibility of subsequent discussion) to the partner country round off the project activity. The local associations are also involved here. The results are saved via video recording and posters and published on Twinspace, homepages and local media. In addition, the approximately 200 children involved have a pen friendship that was established before the project started.
The attentive encounter and intensive examination of the domestic and foreign culture makes the participating children sensitive to dealing with foreign cultures, lets them recognize differences, but also similarities in cultures, which in turn will make a major contribution to peaceful international understanding.
