Project Summary

The project starts from the need to respond to 2 fundamental needs:
Promoting the acquisition of key and innovative competences among students

Promoting environmental and sustainable development education through the integration of the 17 UN SDGS into the relevant education systems.

According to preliminary research carried out during the design phase, the most common educational methods usually do not meet these needs: the skills needed by modern students involve creativity, problem-solving, entrepreneurship and green skills, which can hardly be developed within classic school contexts. In order to adapt educational processes to the challenges of the 21st century, schools need to rely on innovative and practical methods, involving students in challenging activities and combining new educational needs with educational curricula. In order to respond to these needs, the OUTSIDE project will combine practical-experiential approaches to promote learning based on solving real problems related to environmental sustainability.
Therefore the OUTSIDE project has the following objectives:
General Objective (GO): to promote the acquisition of innovative skills in students through the creation of entrepreneurial projects based on sustainable development.
Specific Objectives (SOs):
SO1: Creation of an “open community of learning” involving students, teachers, school staff, institutions, third sector, civil society and business world, based on the development of a multimedia platform;
SO2: To promote the professionalization of teachers in the field of project-based learning, Open Schooling and skills for sustainable development through a specific training course;
SO3: Promoting the protagonism of young people as agents of change, through the collection and promotion of sustainable business projects developed by young people during the project.
SO4: Map the new skills acquired by young students according to an innovative framework developed during the project.

The target groups of OUTSIDE will be:
-Students (age 11-16)
-Teachers

The main results promoted by the project will therefore be:
IO1: OUTSIDE Training Toolkit for Teachers: Environmental Education through Open Schooling (SO2)
IO2: OUTSIDE Online Resource Centre (SO1)
IO3: Collection of business projects OUTSIDE (SO3)
IO4: OUTSIDE Competence Framework and Guidelines for sustainable local development (SO4)

Il Quadro delle Competenze OUTSIDE e Linee Guida per lo sviluppo locale sostenibile

The project is expected to achieve the following impacts
Students (40 in each school) will: experiment a new form of learning, based on real challenges, examine the environmental and/or sustainability problems/challenges affecting a community, open the confrontation with different socio-economic actors of the territory, proposing innovative solutions, improve their entrepreneurial, digital, environmental skills, in the field of sustainability challenges (17 SDGs), the ability to work in a team, their critical thinking, sense of initiative, active citizenship, mapped according to an innovative framework on sustainable development skills, act as promoters of change, through the proposal of innovative and sustainable solutions for local environmental challenges
Teachers participating in the project (at least 5 in each school) will: improve their skills in environmental and sustainability education, with particular regard to the 17 SDGs, acquire the ability to use the acquired knowledge and tools to support their students in project-based learning, acquire the ability to think in an entrepreneurial way when planning learning processes and projects.
In the long term, one of the aims of the project is to encourage the creation of Open Communities of Learning with the task of promoting entrepreneurial spirit and awareness of environmental and sustainability issues among young people, establishing contacts between the public and private sectors and involving schools, companies and interested bodies.
The main expected impact is therefore the creation of OCLs at local level to support the learning process of young people. OUTSIDE also foresees a positive impact on the modernisation and improvement of the quality of training services provided by schools across Europe. The project partners will promote the results of OUTSIDE within their networks of national and international partners in order to foster the dissemination and replicability of the OUTSIDE methodology.
