Project Summary
-Context/background
This project has dealt with one of the most important and highly up-to-date issues of our society : Migration and Hospitality . Migration has impacted widely on European societies and continue to do so because of widespread conflicts and new contrasting policies of various European countries .This has been leading, on one hand, to new forms of discrimination, social exclusion, racism and xenophobia, but on the other hand, to the development of a feeling of empathy, social commitment and inclusive social policies.
Objectives :
– to develop the knowledge of the migration phenomenon, its causes and effects
– to understand the real living conditions of migrants and their point of view
-to analyze the impact of migration at European,national and local level;
– to reflect on the basic values of European Union, that is respect of human rights, democracy, cooperation.
– to propose possible social inclusive policies
– to increase the knowledge and understanding of other cultures encouraging tolerance
– to make student aware of the necessity to combat racism and xenophobia
– to improve skills in foreign languages
– to acquire and to improve students and teachers ‘ skills in the subject area of the project , but also in terms of teamwork, planning and cooperative learning
– to develop ICT skills
Number and profile of participants:
Italy
The school is located in Potenza with 1120 students. It is focused on the relationship between scientific and humanistic knowledge, cultural tools necessary to tackle any type of university studies and the challenges of the contemporary world
Portugal
The School is located in Castelo Maia near Porto . It offers vocational and academic education. It has developed intervention projects centered on the most disadvantaged students with learning difficulties.
Romania
“Decebal” National College ranges from pre-primary level up to the Baccalaureate. The school is of a considerable size (around 1700 students ) and it provides students with a very wide range of courses .
Austria
AK / BHAS Laa an der Thaya is situated in a rural area, close to the Czech border.It is a vocational business school. Students can specialise in tourism, marketing or IT. Since 2016 the school has welcomed refugees , running special class just for them .
Description of activities
Each partner school group :
– made researches on the causes of migration in its own country,
-got information about local associations and NGOs working with migrants , European and national policies,the history of the E.U.
and its values
-produced ppt , videos and shared and compared the findings during the meetings
-met migrants and associations related to the topic making interviews
-made volunteer work in associations dealing with refugees/immigrants etc
-developed an official logo for the project and messages through a competition among partner schools to make T-shirts and other gadgets which were sold to raise money for NGOs
-developed and presented lessons of their own language during the mobilities in order to learn the basics of patners’ languages
-produced the rationale, objectives and plan of activities for the creation of a Citizenship Club at the schools.
-designed a syllabus for a Global Citizenship Education Subject to be implemented in each school
Results attained :
– to be aware of the migration and hospitality problem
– to reduce intolerance, stereotypes , fear of meeting foreigners
– to improve English language skills and learn basic skills in other modern European languages
– to develop knowledge about Europe, its institutions and aims
– to be active European citizens
– to establish contacts in Europe (meeting private and public people,associations and institutions)
– to develop the awareness and appreciation of the variety of European cultures and languages
– to increase students and teachers ‘ motivation in cooperation and exchange of good practices
– to apply ICT-based contents, services, and techniques for life-long learning
Impact attained :
Attitudes towards European citizenship, with a focus on migration and hospitality has improved.
Students and staff of the partner schools have become more interested in mobility and European exchange programmes
Their attraction to language diversity and to innovative ICT tools has increased.
Longer term benefits :
-All partner schools will benefit from having staff and students who can think critically about the world and intervene for change
-The profile of the educational establishment in the local community will be raised.
-It will bring a stronger European dimension to all partner schools
-Increased quality of education and training
-Increased synergies and links among different bodies
-Improved use of European reference tools and certifications
-Increased cooperation among public institutions
-More strategic and integrated use of ICT
