Project Summary

Proverbs are one of the links of the European cultural tradition. Form of a proverb is well known and accepted as an important part in all European cultures. Each nation’s proverbs express their values, morals, views of thinking and traditional beliefs about life. National wisdom and truth are sometime presented in metaphorical but always easy memorable form.
The study of own and other nation’s proverbs can serve as a base for exploring European cultural tradition and enhancing mutual understanding. As a part of national collective memories, proverbs are important part of cultural heritage. Interpreting proverbs is often complex. Interpreting proverbs from other cultures is much more difficult than interpreting proverbs in one’s own culture. Here multimedia presentation forms will give hand in better comprehension.
The main purpose for the project is to promote multinational understanding and cultural diversity applying innovative ICT supported methods and materials in educational process. In a form easily accessible to younger generations, it will be also preserved and passed to future generations.
Common values are in a core of a European cultural heritage, source of inspiration for bridging obstacles and finding new paths over current crisis.

To explore the usage of proverbs in education attracts three partners: Muzeji i galerije Konavala from Croatia, Adult Education Centre of Järvilakeus (Järvilakeuden kansalaisopisto) from Finland and EPRALIMA_Escola Profissional do Alto Lima, C.I.P.R.L. They also represent three major European language groups. They are all active in the field of adult education and seeking innovative ways of teaching and learning. Their staff are a target group and major evaluator of project results.

The intellectual output was the collection of 150 proverbs. Five European values were selected (men and women, behaviour, agriculture, health and seasons), and for each value at least 10 unique local proverbs were chosen. This was the base for creation of common and national didactic materials for teaching proEUverbs in educational process: non-formal learning and creative workshops. Besides, the results of the project are:

1. The exhibition of an art installation. The installation includes depictions of situations, actions, objects and meanings, mentioned in the proverbs.
– One exhibition was held in Portugal and one in Croatia
2. System of digital organization of chosen proverbs for further processing and research (alphabetical, according to the motif of words, by topic).
– proeuverb.eu
3. Examples of how to use proverbs in education: for CLIL and through creative (artistic) workshops
– Aplicable in language classes, art classes, history classes
4. Action research on how to embed proverb usage in different learning environment and how to use them not only for subject learning, but also for building soft and generic competences of students
– Comparative aproach to proverb disemination wihch results in better comprehension of different nations
5. Provide proEUverbs material, exibitions and digital Learning Objects designed for applications in educational process, specially through e-learning
– proeuverb.eu

This project can enhance language awareness through learning about proverbs in other languages.
All developed and tested resources created in project are at the disposal for variety of implementations. It remains up to local activities to implement these resources in innovative ways, or just follow documented and proved implementations. Transfer of presented applications could be expected from one nations to another partner, as well as to other European nations.
After this project, partners have innovative programs that they can offer to the market (exibitions, workshops, courses), and this ensures the sustainability.

We had 4 main local dissemination activities (multiplier events) that were organized as workshops with implementation of project results: two in Croatia (Konavle), Kauhava in Finland and Arcos de Valdedez session in Portugal. Each workshop/session was attend with least 15-30 participants.

Expectation from the project were fulfilled mainly in creative cooperation between partners, and relations which inspired new collaborations. The experience of working in virtual, multinational team, with people from different types of institutions built and strengthend transferable, generic competences of people involved in the project. Such a team inspired a new project idea, more complex and far reaching, and initiated innovations based on holistic approach in education.
