Project Summary

„Out of school teaching – learning outside of the classroom“

Project goal was to promote different parts of teaching into the vicinity of the school. This was more than an one-off trip or an excursion „outside school“. It was a supplement tool to the daily education, and the regular lessons outside the classroom were closely related to the school curriculum. Schoolyard, forest, flora and fauna, as well as museums, historical sites and public spaces, meeting people with their knowledges, experiences and skills – all those learning resources were all included and involved. We wanted to learn about nature in, by and with nature, and about society in, by and with society.

An international partnership with other European schools meant similar interests and the same target. The fact was that the teachers and students came from different cultures and the schools were embedded in different cultural, scenic and school-based educational conditions. Through their diversity the participating schools and teachers complemented each other. The participating teachers regularly exchanged ideas, learnt from each other, worked together and achieved great things in common.

The innovation in the project was the pedagogical approach and the place of learning. As well as the alternative teaching methods associated with it and that were used in the lessons outside the classroom. Everyone had experienced that in the classroom there was not enough space for active learning as well as for movement and learning at one`s own pace. The temporary move away from mainly cognitive learning in the classroom gave the opportunity to to get to grips with the theory they learnt in the classroom outside in active doing.
