Project Summary
To encourage young people the explore and preserve shared European culture they need to feel that all the stories it encompasses have a deeper meaning to them . This project aims to revitalize the approach to teaching how to explore cultural heritage using common digital tools(smartphones, tablets) and emphasizes the importance that a meaningful, modern narrative has to the audience of young students. The digital tools are used to capture and share different forms of cultural phenomena and we’ll learn which medium(text, photo, audio, video) is best suited for which type. *The essence of performance art and literature are captured and shared in very different ways.
There are 4 secondary school participating. They are from Finland, Italy, Greece and Poland. Each school will host a training event with 5 students participating from visiting schools each time and 10-15 students from the hosting school.
The culture heritages we will focus on starts with one the most basic needs that has a lot of cultural tradition built around it: food. When we explore food cultures and their importance to communities we will also work with refugees with poor English(and any of the project language) skills to try and use digital storytelling tools to break down language barriers. The second focus will be the recording of performing arts and their meaning to communities. We will use probably the most evocative form of performing arts: music.
With the third focus we will go to Greece, the birthplace of a lot of shared European culture and lore. With a tour of literature and landmarks we will bring the ancient themes and story lines to the modern age and connect them to our contemporary stories of cultural heritage. Finally we will look at the present and future state of European cultural heritage by using the United Nations Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals concerning cultural sustainability as a tool to evaluate how minority and national cultures are faring and how a sudden changes in demographics(an influx of refugees) might affect them and how we can mitigate negative effect.
There are four training events where students are given brief lectures and they will then research, analyse and present small projects on each topic. Interdisciplinary approach is used when researching the subject. Their findings will be presented in easily shared digital form using, text, pictures, graphics, audio and video depending on the needs of the presented subject itself. Understanding what tools best present which story of cultural heritage is an important part of project and will be addressed throughout. There are also small introductory assignments before a training event starts and a bigger project to be completed on the subject after the training event.
All the methods used, the exercises, the presentations projects will be collected, organized and published on the project web site. We also aim to document the work done at the training events using short video diaries. With the help of these materials, any secondary school can carry out similar exercises with our instructions. We hope that the materials the students produce during the project work are in and of themselves valuable and entertaining presentations of shared European culture. Each of the participating schools will commit to promoting and using at least a part of the resulting material in their own teaching.
