Project Summary
Spaces of Transformation (SPOT) will gather arts educators from 9 cultural centers around Europe. The primary aim of the project is to stimulate professional development and knowledge transfer between arts educators, practitioners and theoreticians. The goal is to strengthen professionals and critically reflect on common practices in order to stimulate and strengthen the field of arts education internationally.
The primary aim of the project is to stimulate professional development and knowledge transfer between arts educators, practitioners and theoreticians, throughout Europe. The goal is to strengthen professionals and critically reflect on common practices in order to stimulate and strengthen the field of arts education internationally.
The objectives of the projects are:
● To share and test innovative approaches of reaching children and young people who have different barriers from participating in the arts – be it disabilities, intercultural or interfaith differences, language barriers, social or economic issues.
● To be a catalyst for cooperation between the participating centres so that the knowledge transfer will also be put into concrete actions.
● To work closely with an academic researcher who will make case studies and support the exploration and development of evaluation methods and practices which will benefit the field of arts education.
The project will be carried out by collective meetings in the form of seminars, which are followed by homework that the arts educators bring back to test at their own center on a local level. The “homework” is evaluated continuously until the next meeting. By this the project is continuously shaped by how successful the implementation has been at the local level. The process is similar to an agile way of working, meaning that an activity is designed, tested, evaluated and immediately reshaped.
Sharing and improving working methods will provide the participants – the arts educators – with new tools and to develop their own methods, for example how to reach children and young people with different barriers from participating in arts education activities. By empowering arts educators as a group, the cultural centres will be able to provide new types of activities, which will improve the quality of the arts education programmes offered. With new and improved methodologies new networks and target groups will be reached. As a result arts education activities will be more recognised as an important tool for democratic development in the local communities.
An academic researcher will follow the process from the start to the end and through this, we’ll be already during the process able to emphasize the valuable knowledge and methods that arts educators possess. The resulting learning and insights from the research, in the form of case studies, will be freely accessible and shared with policy makers in each respective country of the partner organizations. The case studies will also bring the lobbying for innovative approaches in the field of arts education on the international level, connecting and comparing existing policies and encourages a transnational conversation about contemporary issues and meaningful strategies and contributions within the arts and culture. Any organisation and people interested in the question of audience participation in art will be able to take advantage of the results of this research.
