Project Summary
After completing the successful project “Let’s Learn and Inspire Each Other” (COM-REG-2013-005) in the Comenius Regio Partner Program, the partners agreed to continue their cooperation. The Rájec-Jestřebí Grammar School was working at that time in another project with Tvrdošín Grammar School in Slovakia. The representatives of partners from Lithuania and the Czech Republic agreed with the involvement of another partner. The Tvrdošín Grammar School addressed a representative of Tvrdošín municipality and also found a sports club to be involved in the project.
A total of nine partners from three countries – Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Slovakia – met in the project. Each country was represented by the town, a school that was established in the city, and a sports club. These are smaller towns with a population of 3500-14000, schools with a number of pupils from 150 to about 350. Schools are close to each other in the age of pupils attending schools, too. What is more, sports clubs are not big as well, and have links to schools. All partners had already experienced international projects, which was a good prerequisite for managing all parts of the project. Prior to the submission of the project application, great attention was paid to selecting the responsible persons representing partners, setting up implementation teams and distributing tasks among the partners.
The theme of the project was based on non-traditional sports and their spreading towards young people. The project has shown some ways of involving the general public in sporting activities, and the new project has included it in its goals. It focused on connection of cycling and indoor cycling, working with digital technology, creating routes for ergometers and practical realization of sports activities focused on non-traditional and attractive physical activities. During the project implementation, students developed organizational skills and tried to work in a fictitious travel agency.
Among the priorities of the project were the mutual exchange of experience with foreign partners, and an integral part of the project activities were mobilities (short-term student exchanges and short-term joint training of staff), which served to gain theoretical knowledge and to verify this knowledge in practice. This was implemented in the form of camps and teaching / training activities for adults. The aim of the project was to develop skills in the field of ICT, entrepreneurship and language skills of pupils of partner schools. The objectives included broadening participants’ awareness of partner regions and strengthening the sense of European belonging.
The important activities included the development of an intergenerational dialogue, which was well developed at the level of the town-school-club. The participants of the project were pupils and teachers, members of sports clubs, municipality members and town staff. Target groups included the general public of the regions, too. They all could broaden their skills in modern technologies and be engaged in unusual physical activities. School pupils developed their organizational skills further and gained entrepreneurial skills.
During the implementation of the project, participants were positively motivated to acquire skills through the use of interesting and natural methods. The opportunities to participate in international competitions, races or trips on cycling ergometers, or to get acquainted with non-traditional sports, were attractive for a wide range of participants, thus they were trying to cope with ergometers or organize sports competitions. At least the participants of camps and pupils working in fictitious travel agencies have increased their interest in regional geography and history.
The long-term benefits can include the co-operation of partner school management. The headmasters of all three schools were active participants in all project activities and exchanged experiences during informal meetings. The most visible long-term benefit is the interconnection of healthy lifestyle (physical activities) with informal digital skills acquisition.
